Is my salary Halal Or Haram
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:
After I completed my graduation Allah SWT devoted me towards Islam and I started gaining knowledge for almost an year. I didn’t search for a job during that period since I was very keen on gaining more and more knowledge. But owing to being an expatriate in this country I had to search for a job to maintain a valid visa here. Now Alhamdulillah I am working in a government organization and it is very clear to those in gulf countries that the work load in government organizations is less. Hence it became very difficult for me to sit around in the office doing nothing or wasting time chatting with other colleagues like most people do here. So I started to go to a nearby masjid where I would study about Islam or sometimes sleep, I don’t remember wasting time on anything else. After a while I informed by immediate superior about this and he said it was OK but told me to be careful of the big boss. Whenever he needed me he would call me and I would return within a few minutes. But now my superior has changed and this superior is not that helpful as the previous one although I still have the same work load. Sitting in the office without any work can be dangerous also if the big boss notices this. My question is does my going out of the office to study without my superiors permission make my earnings haram even if I complete all of my duties handed over to me? The locals here have no problem even if they don’t have work they chat or do what they want, but for me sitting in a chair and wasting time is very difficult. What should I do if you think what I am doing is haram to compensate this loss and Allah SWT accept my good deeds, since nothing is accepted from someone who eats haram. I know that explaining this to my big boss will not be helpful since he has a hard attitude towards others. Please reply.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Brother leaving your desk and going to the mosque to study religion or sleep is not the right thing to do when you are employed in a government office. Though you might be completing your load of work your immediate boss can rightfully fire you if he finds out. Therefore it is advisable to be available at your desk during all office hours. If there is no pending work you will have to be creative and do something that is connected to the office as being an expatriate you could be terminated for slacking or reading etc., if spotted.
