What is haraam in reciting a particular surah x number of times?

Mu` meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah`s Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamu alikum to all...

First of all i would like to know how and where do u get these answers.. I may not be an AAlim..but ,I too have ilm of Islam to a certain extent... If in Quraan, it said that recite these Sura's and u will heal or feel better...why??? Why do u recite it and usually on water u make a person drink it...Jaushane-Kabir is usually recited on water...I donot believe that reciting 21 times of Ayatul-kursi is doing any Jantar Mantar in Quraan...It is faith ...that do good...u can use it.. not ur intention is to make them hate each is for ur benefit..u tried..and it is  'HIM' only who will help.

Its a Sura u recited with a faith to gain...from the HOLY book..and he says u can knock and knock my door, without losing hope and maybe oneday i will open the door and listen to ur maybe her faith, was so great..that afteeeeeeeeer 4 months of patience and faith was when she got her results... If u can recite 100 times Sura of KUL on the amaal nights to get to the door of Heaven,or for Tauba,  "GOD" does not say to u that u cannot use the same Sura so many times to ask for ur child's safety, or his/her, becoming better, If H. HUR, [A.S.], could ask for forgiveness,we are also, Humans..and no man is perfect..but to pray for the better of us ...there are many dua's ,it is only faith that works.. but i donot believe that anyone is misusing the 'HOLY',kitaab, by reciting any Surah as many as one likes,

for depression..i rem' my friend used to recite Surah of DAHAR, 5 times day and night, for husband, and... aftttttttttttttter 4/6 weeks.....she started finding results.......... she gained faith and passed this to so many.. people as........ depression has become very common in this ...please...........................

I would highly appreciate, if u increase..........more light to me of this instead of a muslim's, faith, in reciting many times a dua will become of fright and lose hope of gaining..from ones own AHLE-KITAAB...

Wassalaam.........waiting for ur reply...............

What is haraam in reciting a particular surah x number of times

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The first thing that we, as believers, must recognize and admit is that there was no one who walked this planet earth worshipped Allah Subhanah better or more than the self of the noble Messenger of Allah, Mohamed ar-Rasool Allah (saws). Allah Subhanah honored and chose him (saws) as His Messenger, and revealed the Glorious Quran unto him. He (saws) was directly guided by Allah Subhanah in all the deeds that he did; so much so that Allah Subhanah has commanded the believers to make the noble Prophet (saws) their example and model of how to live a perfect life.

Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzab verse 21:

There is indeed the best example for you to follow, in the Messenger of Allah, for every such person looks forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.

Thus, the question one must be prepared to answer when doing any deed in the deen of Islam is whether the Messenger of Allah (saws) performed the deed himself, or whether he approved of the deed. Did the Messenger of Allah (saws) ever in his life time recite the magnificient ‘aayat-ul-kursi’ exactly twenty one times on something or someone? Did the Messenger of Allah (saws) ever in his lifetime recite ‘Jaushane-Kabir’ (??) on water and drink it or give it to the believers to drink? Did he (saws) ever recite Surah Dhuhr precisely five times on anyone???????

There is absolutely no evidence that the Messenger of Allah (saws) recited the above Surahs over and over again for a specific number of times to remove any affliction! The only Surahs which he would recite on a specific basis was the Surah Kahf every Friday, and Surah Falaq and Surah Naas when he retired for the night. He recited the Glorious Quran day and night, but never did he (saws) ever specify that one should recite ‘aayat-ul-kursi’ 21 days when afflicted with so and so, or recite ‘Jaushane-Kabir’ (??) on water and drink it, or recite Surah Dhuhr exactly five times when afflicted with so and so!!!!

If one starts to invent his own ways in the deen, he either thinks that he knows more than the Messenger of Allah (saws); or that the Messenger of Allah (saws) forgot to tell the believers something; or that the worship of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was not perfect in every respect!

If Allah and His Messenger (saws) have commanded the believers to do something, or if one has evidence that the Messenger of Allah (saws) did some deed in his life, or approved the deed; then it is incumbent upon the believer to obey and follow the Prophet (saws) unconditionally.

But if the Messenger of Allah (saws) did not do a particular deed, no man has a right to invent a deed on his own, and calculate the specific times a particular Surah or Aayah has to be recited! One may recite the Surah or Aayah any number of times he wills and whenever he wishes….but to give a specific time and number of reptitions would be introducing a new thing in the deen brought by Mohamed (saws); and that would be considered an innovation and ‘bidah’.

And like all innovations in the deen, it should be immediately rejected by the believers.

It has been reported in an authentic narration that the Prophet of Allah (saws) said: “Whoever introduces a ‘bida’ (innovation) in this deen brought by me (saws), it will be rejected.”

It has been reported by Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (r.a.) that the Prophet of Allah (saws) said: “If anyone introduces an innovation (in religion), he will be responsible for it. If anyone introduces an innovation or gives shelter to a man who introduces an innovation (in religion), he is cursed by Allah, by His angels, and by all the people.”

It has been reported by Jabir ibn Abdullah (r.a.) in another authentic narration that the Prophet of Allah (saws) said in a sermon: “The best speech is that which is embodied in the Book of Allah, the Al Quran; and the best guidance is the guidance given by me, Mohamed (saws). The most evil affairs are the innovations, and every innovation is an error.”

When one is afflicted by any calamity or mishap, he may call on his Lord as many times as he wills; for our Merciful Lord is indeed All Hearing, Oft Forgiving!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chater 40 Surah Mumin verse 60:

And Your Lord says, “Call upon Me. I will answer your prayers. Those who disdain My worship on account of arrogance, shall certainly enter Hell in disgrace!”

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 186:

And if My servants ask you, O Prophet, concerning Me, tell them that I am quite near to them. I hear and answer the prayer of the suppliant, when he calls on Me. So let them respond to My call and believe in Me. (Convey this to them), perhaps they may be guided aright!

Abu Hurairah reported, "The Prophet (saws) said, "Nothing is more dear to Allah than one's supplication to Him.''

Nu'man b. Bashir reported that the Prophet (saws), said, "Verily supplication is worship."

Salman reported that the Prophet (saws), said, "Your Lord, the Blessed and the Exalted One, is Modest and Generous, and He loathes to turn away His servant empty-handed when he raises his hands to Him in supplication."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2257 Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri

The Prophet (saws) said, "Any Muslim who makes a supplication containing nothing which is sinful or which involves breaking ties of relationship will be given for it by Allah one of three things: He will give him swift answer, or store it up for him in the next world, or turn away from him an equivalent amount of evil." Those who heard it said they would then make many supplications and he replied that Allah was more ready to answer than they were to ask.

Ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet (saws), said, "If any servant of Allah afflicted with distress or grief makes this supplication, his supplication will be accepted: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of your maidservant. My forehead is in Your hand. Your command conceming me prevails, and Your decision concerning me is just. I call upon You by every one of the beautiful names by which You have described Yourself, or which You have revealed in Your book, or have taught anyone of Your creatures, or which You have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, the light of my breast, and remover of my griefs, sorrows, and afflictions'." A supplication in these words will be answered. Allah will remove one's affliction and replace it with joy and happiness.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2248 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "There are three whose supplication is not rejected: one who has just ended a fast, a just imam, and one who has been wronged, whose supplication is raised by Allah above the clouds and for which the gates of Heaven are opened. The Lord says, 'I swear by My might that I shall certainly help you, though it be after some time.'"

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
