I just went through this Naat of sami yusuf

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

A.o.A burhan bhai

Firstly, i just went through this Naat of sami yusuf, i am sure u must be quite familliar with him? the one who does it in english, aniways the wordings are quite touchy and all, i do want to hear it, but there he sometimes has also used instruments like piano, violin or other soft voiced intstruemnts, what do you say about it? doesn`t Islam forbids them?? and makes us use only the "dafli" instrument??

Secondly, One of the questions you have replied in your forums that :

Your Question: I also need "the three umoor of knowing Allah`s names that is --1- Asbath al Ism 2--Asbath al siffat 3-- Asbath al Asar with each and every name. If i am not mistaken one is garanteed the entrance to jannah after knowing the umoor and acting upon them and not just by memorizing or reciting the names. (according to the authentic Hadeeth)

These Noble Attributes are not some chants, where simply by repeating a certain Attribute ‘x’ number of times, one will get the desired result! If one recites the Noble Attribute of Allah Who is indeed the Ar-Razzaak (The Provider) a billion times one will not become rich, nor can one get his sins forgiven by chanting ‘Al-Ghaffaar’ a million times, etc.

Never ever did the Messenger of Allah (saws) repeat a particular Attribute of Allah a certain fixed number of times, nor did he (saws) ever encourage the believers to do so.

Here, burhan bhai, i just wanted to ask you, that, didn`t Holy Prophet P.B.U.H set himself the Tasbih-e-Fatima? when she asked him that she gets tired doing all the homework and she was also injured slightly, Holy Prophet advised here, to her, that to recite SubhanAllah 31 times and then Alhumdullilah 31 times and Allahuakbar 32 times .... isnt this true? the whole humanity does this, if i am not mistaken and moreover, this Number was set up by Holy prophet PBUH now how can you say he never set ani number? nor encouraged? do you then again say that reciting or repetance of limited number of attributes of ALlah, is like still an innovation??

Answer:

Repetiion and tasbih

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Firstly, i just went through this Naat of sami yusuf, i am sure u must be quite familliar with him? the one who does it in english, aniways the wordings are quite touchy and all, i do want to hear it, but there he sometimes has also used instruments like piano, violin or other soft voiced intstruemnts, what do you say about it? doesn`t Islam forbids them?? and makes us use only the "dafli" instrument??

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.494B Narrated by Abu Amir

that he heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of (unlawful) musical instruments, as lawful.”

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3153 Narrated by Muhammad ibn Hatib al-Jumahi

The Prophet (saws) said, "The distinction between what is lawful and what is unlawful is the song and the tambourine at a wedding."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3654 Narrated by Abu Umamah

The Prophet (saws) said, "Allah has sent me as a mercy to the universe and as a guidance to the universe, and my Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, has commanded me to annihilate stringed musical instruments, wind musical instruments, idols, crosses and pre-Islamic customs.”

Beloved brother, if any music contains the sounds or notes made by string or wind musical instrument, that such music would be forbidden for the believers to play or hear.

Your Question: Here, burhan bhai, i just wanted to ask you, that, didn`t Holy Prophet P.B.U.H set himself the Tasbih-e-Fatima? when she asked him that she gets tired doing all the homework and she was also injured slightly, Holy Prophet advised here, to her, that to recite SubhanAllah 31 times and then Alhumdullilah 31 times and Allahuakbar 32 times .... isnt this true?

Perhaps the hadith which you are referring to is the one quoted below:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.344 Narrated by Ali

Hadrat Fatimah (the daughter of the Prophet (saws)) complained of what she suffered from the hand mill and from grinding, and when she got the news that some slave girls of the booty had been brought to Allah's Messenger (saws), she went to him to ask for a maid-servant, but she could not find him, and she told Hadrat Aisha (r.a.) of her need. When the Prophet (saws) came, Aisha (r.a.) informed him of that. The Prophet (saws) came to our house when we had gone to our beds. (On seeing the Prophet (saws)) we were going to get up, but he (saws) said, 'Keep at your places,' I felt the coolness of the Prophet's (saws) feet on my chest. Then he (saws) said, "Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: 'Allahu Akbar’ (i.e. Allah is Greatest)' 34 times, and 'Alhamdu Lillah’ (i.e. all Praise is due to Allah) 33 times, and ‘Subhan Allah’ (i.e. Glorified be Allah) 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested."

The above hadith is indeed considered authentic by the scholars of ahaadeeth, and because Hadrat Fatimah (r.a.) is the addressee and recipient of the above hadith, the hadith and the ‘tasbeeh’ contained therein is popularly recognized as ‘tasbih-fatimah’.

Your Question: the whole humanity does this, if i am not mistaken and moreover, this Number was set up by Holy prophet PBUH now how can you say he never set ani number? nor encouraged?

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.514 Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "If one says one-hundred times in one day: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Alone Who has no partners, to Him belongs Dominion and to Him belong all the Praises, and He has power over all things", one will get the reward of manumitting ten slaves, and one-hundred good deeds will be written in his account, and one-hundred bad deeds will be wiped off or erased from his account, and on that day he will be protected from the morning till evening from the Shaytan, and nobody will be superior to him except one who has done more than that which he has done."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2185 Narrated by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib

The Prophet (saws) said, "If anyone recites ten times 'Say, He is Allah, One and Only …. (Surah 112: Al-Ikhlaas), a palace will be built for him in Paradise because of it; if anyone recites twenty times two places will be built for him in Paradise because of it; and if anyone recites it thirty times three palaces will be built for him in Paradise because of it." Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "I swear by Allah, O Messenger of Allah (saws), that we shall then produce many palaces for ourselves”; to which he (saws) replied, "Allah's abundant Grace is even more comprehensive than that."

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "If anyone said in the morning and evening: 'subhana-Allah wa bihamdihi' (Glory to Allah and all praise to Him), a hundred times, on the Day of Judgment none will come with anything better than that except the person who utters similar words or adds some to them."

Abdallah b. Habib reported that the Prophet (saws) said, "Speak." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah (saws), what should I say?" He (saws) replied, "Recite Surat al-Ikhlas (112th Surah), and the two last surahs (of the Qur'an), i.e. Surat al-Falaq (113th) and Surat an-Naas (114th), in the morning and evening three times, and it will suffice you for everything."

Beloved brother, there are several ‘tasbihs’ or repetition of phrases or Surahs which were done by the Messenger of Allah (saws) himself, and he (saws) guided the believers to do the same; thus the doing of such repetitions which are specifically endorsed by the Messenger of Allah (saws) form part of his Sunnah and the believers are definitely encouraged to obey and follow the Prophet’s Sunnah.

When the Messenger of Allah (saws) guided the believers on any aspect of the deen, then it becomes incumbent upon the believers to obey and accept exactly what is declared by the Messenger of Allah (saws). When the Messenger of Allah (saws) has given a specific number, then we should know and believe that it is this number of repetitions alone that is acceptable and best in the Sight of Allah Subhanah; and when the Messenger of Allah (saws) has not given a specific number, then it would not befit a believer that he should invent or allocate a specific number towards that repetition from himself without any authority from Allah and His Messenger (saws).

Your Question: do you then again say that reciting or repetance of limited number of attributes of ALlah, is like still an innovation??

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraaf verses 180-181:

180 The Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah: so call upon Him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in His Names: for what they do they will soon be requited.

181 Of those We have created are people who direct (others) with Truth and dispense justice therewith.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 110:

110 Say: "Call upon Allah or call upon Ar-Rahmaan: by whatever name ye call upon Him (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.”

Allah Subhanah has guided the believers to call upon Him by His Exclusive and Noble Attributes and Names, thus one may call upon Him through any of His Names.

To the best of our knowledge there is absolutely no evidence in the authentic Sunnah or established Practice of the Messenger of Allah (saws) whereby he (saws) advocated calling any Name or Attribute of Allah for a fixed number of times to obtain a particular blessing or reward; and when the Messenger of Allah (saws) has neither fixed a number of its repetitions nor specified its rewards, it does not behove and befit that one invent or fix a number from himself or choose a reward for his invention without any authority from Allah and His Messenger (saws)!

For the phrases or Surahs where the Messenger of Allah (saws) has fixed a number for its repetition, the believers should follow that guidance without stint….but when the Messenger of Allah (saws) has not fixed a number, one should not invent and fix a number or its reward from themselves, if indeed they wish to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
