As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

AOA. My question refers to a Hadith according to which majority of women will go to hell because of being ungrateful and scolding towards their husbands. Seeking forgiveness of Allah (swt), i want to ask that a lot of women are being tortured by their husbands during the course of thier lives, lots of them are victims of wife battering , domestic violence and other atrocities, why then its the woman who has to face the fires of hell in the hereafter??? if we look around ,its the majority of women who are being wronged by their husbands and who suffer the cruelties of their husbands, why then Islam leaves no consolation for this oppressed creature in the hereafter ??? and why is it so that a man will not be held accountable for being cruel towards his wife ??? over to you with kind regards

Answer:

Husband-Wife relations

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Statement: My question refers to a Hadith according to which majority of women will go to hell because of being ungrateful and scolding towards their husbands.

The exact words of the hadith are as follows:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.125 Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas

The Prophet (saws): “I saw the (Hell) Fire, and I have never before seen such a horrible sight as that, and I saw that the majority of its dwellers were women." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah (saws)! What is the reason for that?" He (saws) replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was said. "Do they disbelieve in Allah (are they ungrateful to Allah)?" He (saws) replied, "They are not thankful to their husbands, and are ungrateful for the favors done to them. Even if you do good to one of them all your life, when she seems some harshness from you, she will say, "I have never seen any good from you.' "

The Messenger of Allah (saws) was guiding the believing woman from being ungrateful to their husbands, and reminded them that how hated it is in the sight of Allah Subhanah for a wife to say to a righteous husband, when after being good and fair to his wife all his life, he makes one error, and the wife with her harsh words, washes away all the good done to her.

Islam guides both the husband and the wife to be merciful, forgiving, and fore-bearing with each other; only then can there be peace, mutual love and respect, and tranquility in one’s family life.

Your Question: i want to ask that a lot of women are being tortured by their husbands during the course of thier lives, lots of them are victims of wife battering , domestic violence and other atrocities, why then its the woman who has to face the fires of hell in the hereafter???

Every person, whether he be male or female, will have to pay for his/her misdeeds in the Just Court of the All-Mighty Lord. If a husband abuses the authority and responsibility laid upon him by Allah Subhanah, and tortures his wife, or beats her unjustly, and oppresses and tyrannizes her; he will indeed have a severe accounting of his evil deeds in the Presence of The All-Just Lord.

If the man is good and righteous, and respects and honors his wife, and gives her the rights that are due to her in accordance with the Guidance of Allah and His Messenger, he will be rewarded and honored for his good deeds.

The Prophet (saws) said in an authentic narration: ‘The best amongst you is the one who is best to his wife; and I (saws) am best to my wife.”

He (saws) also said in another authentic narration: “The best wealth is the wealth one spends on his wife and children.”

And if a woman is righteous, worships Allah Subhanah in accordance with the Guidance, and her husband is pleased with her; she will have a huge reward in the Presence of her Merciful Lord.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3254 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "When a woman observes the five times of prayer, fasts during Ramadan, preserves her chastity and obeys her husband, she may enter by any of the gates of Paradise she wishes."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 286 Narrated by Umm Salamah

The Prophet (saws) said: “If a woman dies while her husband was pleased with her, she will enter Paradise.”

The decision of Allah Subhanah on who deserves Paradise and who deserves Hell Fire will not be made on the gender of the person; but rather on their deeds! On that Inevitable Day, the righteous, whether they be male or female, will be honored according to their deeds; and the sinful, whether they be male or female, will be disgraced according to their deeds! No one will be dealt with unjustly in the least.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 195: And their Lord hath accepted of them and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: ye are members one of another; those who have left their homes or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My cause, or fought, or been slain, verily I will blot out from them their iniquities and admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath; a reward from the presence of Allah, and from His presence is the best of rewards."

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 124:If any do deeds of righteousness, be they male or female, and have faith they will enter heaven and not the least injustice will be done to them.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 35: For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who fast, for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah's praise; for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

Your Question: if we look around ,its the majority of women who are being wronged by their husbands and who suffer the cruelties of their husbands, why then Islam leaves no consolation for this oppressed creature in the hereafter ???

Islam gives consolation to the oppressed like no other deen in the world!!! Islam commands the oppressor to fear Allah, His Might, and His Retribution before he even thinks of oppressing someone; and assures the oppressed that in the life of the Hereafter, he/she will be recompensed in full. Everything that a person does, good or bad, small or big, is recorded in an open register; and on an Inevitable Day, each person will carry his own record and present himself before his All Just Lord for a full accounting.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.629 Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Whoever has oppressed another person concerning his reputation or anything else, he should beg him to forgive him before the Day of Resurrection, when there will be no money (to compensate for wrong deeds); but if he has good deeds, those good deeds will be taken from him according to his oppression which he has done, and if he has no good deeds, the sins of the oppressed person will be loaded on him."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.628 Narrated by Ibn Abbas

The Prophet (saws) sent Mu'adh to Yemen and said, "Be afraid from the curse of the oppressed, as there is no screen between his invocation and Allah."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2603 Narrated by Abbas ibn Mirdas

Allah's Messenger (saws) prayed for pardon for his people on the late evening of Arafah, and received the reply (from Allah Subhanah), "I have forgiven them all, but acts of oppression, for I shall exact recompense for him who is wronged, from his oppressor."

Your Question: and why is it so that a man will not be held accountable for being cruel towards his wife ???

Dear and beloved Sister in Islam, our Lord is not an Un-Just Lord! Every individual, whether he be male or female, will be accountable in the Just Court of Allah for his deeds; and no one will be dealt with unjustly in the Presence of the All-Just Lord!

If a man has been cruel to his wife unjustly, he will have a severe accounting in the Just Court of Allah Subhanah! None will be able to avoid His Justice, and no amount of ransom will be accepted from the guilty ones! Every single soul will be heard and dealt fairly and with justice, and no one will be wronged in the least in The Supreme Court of Allah Subhanah! The evil may be able to get away from justice in the life of this transitory world; but in the Court of Allah Subhanah, no guilty person will have the power or ability to offer an excuse when he will come face to face with the One who is Best and Able to Exact Retribution! And none can exact retribution like the Retribution of the All Mighty Lord of the worlds.

Can any deen or system in the world offer more security to the oppressed, and put more fear into the oppressor than this approved deen of the Lord of the Worlds, Al Islam?

Glory be to Allah, and High and Far Exalted is He, in Whose Hands is the Dominion of the heavens and the earth.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
