One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

My second question is that one of my friend can`t get pregnant, because she is not able to give birth to a baby. There is a treatment that called IVF. Wat happens in this treatment that is a woman don`t have eggs in her ovaries then she`ll have to get egg from any fertility clinic then doctors will put her husband`s sperm in that egg, and then that egg will fertilize and then they`ll put that egg in tht woman`s ovaries, and then that egg will become an embryo and will grow in that woman`s uterus. Now i have a question that my friend is worried about that where will she get that donation of egg from? She wants to get that egg from her family but she wants to know that if it`s right according to Islam or not.....Please brother reply me AS SOON AS YOU CAN....and i can tell my frind wat`s right or wrong.

IVF birth treatment

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. It is obvious that such modern medical technology like artificial insemination or IVF treatments were not available at the time when the Quran was being revealed, thus the Quran and the Sunnah are obviously silent on the issue. With the advancement of modern technology the scholars and jurists in Islam have strived to derive an opinion regarding its permissibility in light of the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah.

In the opinion of the majority of the scholars in Islam, there is no harm if when one has a low sperm or egg count or any other medical problem, and one wishes to use modern medicine and technology and means of artificial insemination to try to conceive a child, provided the sperm and the egg used to fertilize the ovum are from the same married couple.

But the scholars in Islam have voiced their opinion and declared it absolutely impermissible for the couple to try to conceive a child, where the sperm or the egg is from any one other than their very own (surrogate father or mother, etc.).

And Allah Alone Knows Best.
