Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamu alikum,

Dear Burhan,

Hope you and your mentors are doing fine. May Allah bless you and pleased with this effort and with this forum and help all us from hell fire.

Convey my Salaam to all.

I'm here with one doubt - Why I am asking this question is because while going through some of quotes said by some spiritual leaders (Dalai Lama etc), found to be very inspiring OR thought invoking. What our view should be towards such things?

How we can consider personality development books, time management books that are available in market? We have to totally ignore those as those books give certain expertise.

Also advise on learning of martial arts etc.

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Quotes from other scholars

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

A believer is at absolutely liberty to utilize any knowledge or thought-invoking or inspiring statements or quotes or books written by anyone……as long as that knowledge or statements do not go against the clear Guidance of the Glorious Quran and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

Thus to determine whether the knowledge dispersed by the others is beneficial or harmful, one must first and foremost strive to the best of one’s ability to comprehend the knowledge of the Quran and the Sunnah. If the knowledge taught by the others does not go against any of the dictates of the Quran and the Sunnah, one is at absolute liberty to benefit from it…..but if anything said or written by them is against the Glorious Quran and the Sunnah, it should be obvious to the believers that such ‘knowledge’ would bring them nothing but harm and ruin.

Your Question: ….Also advise on learning of martial arts etc.

There is absolutely nothing in the Quran or the Sunnah which discourages or prohibits the believers from learning the science or sport of martial arts…..thus the believers are at absolute liberty to not only learn but master this art of self-defense, if indeed they wish to do so.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
