Hadith ref at burial

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

  • Close the eyes and the mouth of the deceased if open, straighten their hands and their legs if bent.

The Prophet (saws) went to visit Abu Salamah (r.a.). He saw that his eyes were wide open and blank with the stare of death. So the Prophet (saws) closed his eyes and said: "Verily, when a soul is seized, the eyesight follows it."

At times it may happen that if the hands and the legs of the deceased are left bent for a long period of time, the joints in the body of the deceased become cold, and it would be unable to straighten them. The absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam recommend that the hands and the legs of the deceased if bent at the time of death should be straightened, so that a honorable burial is provided for their deceased brethren.

  • Wash the body of the deceased.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.353 Narrated by Um Atiyya

One of the daughters of the Prophet (saws) expired and he (saws) came to us and said, "Wash her (deceased body) with ‘Sidr’ (water) for odd number of times, i.e. three, five or more, if you think it necessary, and in the last, put camphor or (some camphor on her), and when you finish, notify me." So when we finished we informed him. He (saws) gave his waist-sheet to us (to shroud her).

  • Shroud the body of the deceased, preferably in white cloth.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 4.33a

Topic: Preferable Practices in Shrouding the deceased

In shrouding, the following practices are recommended and should be observed while preparing a body for burial.

1. The shroud should be nice, clean, and large enough to cover the entire body. This is based on a narration of Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi from Abu Qatadah that the Prophet (saws) said: "If one of you is a guardian to his deceased brother, he should give him the best shroud he can."

2. A shroud should be white, as it is recorded by Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud, and Tirmidhi on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet (saws) said: "Wear white clothes, for these are your best clothes, and enshroud your dead in them."

3. The shroud should be scented and perfumed. The hadith is cited by Ahmad and by Al-Hakim in accordance with Jabir's narration that the Prophet (saws) said: "If you perfume a dead body, do it three times." Abu Sa'id, Ibn 'Umar, and Ibn 'Abbas directed their heirs in their wills to perfume their shrouds with aloes-wood.

4. The shroud should be three wraps for a man and five wraps for a woman, in light of what is narrated by Bukhari and Muslim from Aishah who said: "The Messenger of Allah (saws) was wrapped in three pieces of new white sheets of cloth from Yemen, without a shirt or a turban."

  • The believers should offer the prescribed funeral prayer for the deceased.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 4.37

Topic: Funeral Prayer, its Legal Status

There is an absolute consensus among all the scholars and jurists in Islam that a funeral prayer for a believing deceased person is a collective obligation or ‘fard kifayah’. The Prophet (saws) commanded the believers to offer the funeral prayers of their believing deceased brethren.

Abu Hurairah reported that when the Prophet (saws) was informed of the death of a believer, he (saws) used to ask: ‘Does he owe anything to anyone?' If the answer was in the affirmative, he (saws) would then ask: 'Has he (the deceased) left anything to settle his debt?' If the deceased had left something to settle his debt, he (saws) would offer the funeral prayer for him. Otherwise, he (saws) would say to his companions: 'Offer a (funeral) prayer for your brother"' (Related by Bukhari and Muslim).

  • Immediately after the burial, it is Sunnah to again make supplication for the deceased.

Hadrat Uthman ibn Affan (r.a.) said:: "After burial the Prophet (saws) would stand by the grave of the deceased and say: "Seek forgiveness for your brother and pray for his acceptance, because he is now being questioned about it."

Related by Abu Daw'ud and al-Hakim.

  • Guide and exhort the family of the deceased towards patience, and try to provide them food and drink for the three-day period of mourning.

Abdullah ibn Ja'far (r.a.) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws), at the martyrdom of Hadrat Jaafar ibn Abi Talib (r.a.), said: "Prepare some food for the family of Ja'far (ibn Abi Taalib (r.a.)), for what has befallen them is keeping them preoccupied."

Related by Abu Daw'ud, Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi,

Usamah ibn Zaid reported, "A daughter of the Prophet (saws) sent him a message to come to her house, because a son of hers had died. In response the Prophet (saws) sent her a message with his regards saying: 'Verily, to Allah belongs what He has taken, and to Him belongs what He has given. For everything He has set a term. So be patient and be content'.'' (Related by Bukhari)

Ibn Majah and Al-Baihaqi reported from Amr ibn Hazm that the Prophet (saws) said: "Every believer who consoles his brother in distress, will be dressed by Allah in an apparel of honor on the Day of Resurrection."

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
