Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Is it permissible to give Zakat to ones` grandchildren whose father has died leaving no assets behind for their upbringing and education?Their mother has since remarried.

Answer:

Can one give Zakat to one’s grand children

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

One’s own grand-children, regardless of their poverty, or whether their father has died, or their mother has since remarried, etc. will be considered amongst those whom the grand-parents are responsible for; and thus they are not liable to receive zakah funds from their grand-parents. The grand-parents are obliged and responsible to spend on their grand-children from their non-zakah funds.
