One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Asalam wa Alaikum Brother,

With regards to the topic, i would like to know about a Hadith which states: To protect yourself from being cast by Black magic, recite Surah Al Ikhlas, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas, each 3 times after Fajr and Maghrib prayers. And recite every time starting with "Bismillahhirrahmannirrahim".

Please advice whether the Hadith is authentic.

Asalam wa Alaikum

Answer:

Cure magic

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Please advice whether the Hadith is authentic.

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, to the best of our knowledge there is absolutely no such hadith as quoted by you above in the authentic records of Hadiths.

If one fears any evil from the whispering of the Jinns, or the effects of the evil-eye, or magic, or any other quarter of the ‘unseen’, one should follow the established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) and seek refuge in their All-Mighty Lord Creator by reciting the ‘Muawwidaat’ (113th Surah Al-Falaq and 114th Surah An-Naas) as often as they can or is easy for them; it is expected that their Lord will protect them from any and all evil.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 1019 Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri

The Prophet (saws) used to seek protection in Allah against the Jinn and the evil eye till the Surahs al-Falaq and an-Naas were revealed. After they were revealed he (saws) stuck to them and discarded everything beside them.

Every Surah of the Glorious Quran which starts with the ‘Bismillah…..’ should obviously be recited with the ‘Bismillah…..’; but one should not restrict the recitation to a limited number of times (3 or 7 or 10 or 40, etc.), nor should one restrict or specify its time of recitation (fajr, magrib, or any other) when such specifications and restrictions are not endorsed by the Messenger of Allah (saws).

To invent or issue a specification or restriction from oneself in any aspect of the deen when the Messenger of Allah (saws) has not endorsed it would be to introduce an innovation or ‘bida’ in the deen of Islam; and every innovation in the pure and perfect deen of Islam would be an error.

Sahih Muslim Hadith 1885 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah

That the Prophet of Allah (saws) said in a sermon: “The best speech is that which is embodied in the Book of Allah, the Al Quran; and the best guidance is the guidance given by me, Mohamed (saws). The most evil affairs are the innovations (bida), and every innovation (bida) is an error.”

Aisha narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion, then that thing will be rejected.’

Whenever one fears or wishes to seek protection from any evil, one may recite the ‘Muawwidaat’ ((113th Surah Al-Falaq and 114th Surah An-Naas) as often as they wish or is easy for them, and keep their full trust and belief in the Power and Protection of their Lord Most High; it is expected that their Lord will protect them from any and all evil.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
