Salaam,
I was just wondering whether wearing silver or stainless steel chains were allowed in Islam. Furthermore, are chains with surah pendants allowed ?

Jazak`allah

Answer:

Can men wear silver ornaments

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: I was just wondering whether wearing silver or stainless steel chains were allowed in Islam.

Adornment and ornaments are generally associated with the nature of the female sex to enhance their beauty, and not particularly encouraged for the males in Islam. Although there is no specific prohibition against wearing silver or stainless steel chains for men in Islam, such adornment as chains, pendants, etc. does not behove and befit the nature of the believing men.

Your Question: Furthermore, are chains with surah pendants allowed ?

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 185:

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down: this Book is a Perfect Guidance for mankind and consists of clear Teachings which show the Right Way, and are a Criterion of the Truth and falsehood.

Allah Subhanah revealed the Surahs of the Glorious Quran as a perfect guidance, so that man would understand, ponder, and devoutly obey and follow its wise commandments. Wearing prescribed Surahs of the Glorious Quran on oneself as an aide for adornment would not in any way fulfill the mission of the Message and never ever did the Messenger of Allah (saws), or his family or his noble companions ever wear or adorned themselves with surah pendants.

It would be far more beneficial to spiritually inscribe and imbibe the wise counsel of the Surahs of the Glorious Quran on one’s heart and lives, rather than simply physically adorn oneself with pendants inscribed with the Surahs of the Quran!

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
