Umrah hajj reading dua in each tawaf

Dear Brother Burhan,
This is the first time I am writing to you, despite having millions of querries
about Islam in my mind. Being born a muslim, I am very guilty when I say that I
have very little knowledge on the subject. Your emails are a wonderful source
of knowledge for me and I hope and pray that God bestows you with the best of
everything, because you are doing a wonderful job at guiding people like us.
I have many questions in my mind tonight, which I will try to enter today.
However, my first question to you, is one of an urgent need. Alhamdullillah I
will be accompanying my parents for Hajj in January. I have obtained a book
which defines all the procedures that have to be performed during this
pilgrimage, although we will be accompanied by a Muallim who will be guiding us
at each step. This book that I have obtained, has numerous duaas or aayaats
that are required to be recited at virtually every step of the way. For
example, in the seven circuits of Tawwaaf, there is a separate duaa to be
recited in each ciruit! Plus, the whole book has as many as hundred different
duaas, to be recited at different periods, i.e. when departing from relatives,
when entering ehraam, when stepping out of the house, when on the road, when on
the plane, when 10 miles from Macca, etc. I hope you know what I mean. There
are so many of them.
My question basically is; are all these really important? Although there is no
binding on memorising them, I feel that one would not even get the time to
recite them from the book at the appropiate times. The first few may be simple
but as the days go on, how would we manage it? Moreover, it would be humanly
impossible to be reading out of the book while performing Tawwaaf!. Even if we
remember the meaning of each aayat and just say the dua in our hearts, there is
a possibility that we can get completey mixed up and say the wrong thing in the
wrong place. Above all, ou Muallim has not said a word about remembering all
these. In his classes, he just keeps emphasizing on Labbaikh.
My effort would be to remember as many as possible but I`m scared of getting
them messed up. For instance, people say that the first time you see the Kaaba,
the first duaa that comes to your mind will be accepted. At that moment of
glory, there is yet another duaa to be recited! Now am I supposed to ask for my
duaa or recite the aayat in the book? I am most confused Burhan and I would
really appreciate it if you can help me resolve this situation. Kindly guide me
how to go about this, because if I am required to remember all the aayaat, then
I will have to start remembering them from now itself, so as to be able to
complete them in 45 days before I leave.
I have one more question related to Hajj, which I would like to ask here. Being
women, myself and my mother will not have problems with the ehraam in the
chilly weather, as we can wear warm clothes inside. However, since my father
will only be wearing two unstitched pieces of cloth, would he be allowed to
wear a shawl or any warm clothes, so as to not catch cold? My father is very
sensitive to the cold weather and generally has a running nose every 15 days.
In a place like Mina or Arafaat, would he be allowed any kind of protection?

In the
name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness.
Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray,
none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no
person, no grave, no prophet, no imam,
no dai, nobody!) worthy of
worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His
slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Your Question Ref: reciting the various duas during ‘tawaaf’
You have
not mentioned the specific book you have received from your Hajj operators, so
it would not be appropriate for us to comment on the authenticity of what is
mentioned. There is absolutely no
authentic narration from the Prophet (saws) that he would recite a particular
dua on every ‘tawaaf’; one may glorify Allah Subhanah, or recite the Quran, or
make whatever supplication one wishes to make during the ‘tawaaf’ and the
‘sai’.
Your
Question: In a place like Mina or Arafaat, would he be allowed any kind of
protection?
Allah Subhanah has blessed the Holy city of
When in
the state of ‘ehraam’, the male servants of Allah Subhanah are commanded to
wear the two pieces of unstitched cloth.
If one fears cold weather for any reason, there are thicker materials
available which should help keep the person warm; but it would not be
appropriate to wear additional clothing over the ‘ehraam’.
