Mufti and Fatwas

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalam Alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakaatahu.

Brother Burhan, Jakallah khair for the beautiful work that u r doing. I really like ur answers. My question is:

"Are your answers to be considered fatwas? If they are fatwas, isn`t it required that only a Mufti can issue fatwas?"

Thank u for ur time, and I do not mean to offend u. I just want to clarify the Mufti issue.

Answer:

Mufti and fatwas

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best of this world and the Hereafter for your kind comments of encouragement for our humble efforts in the propagation of the Truth. We humbly hope, beg, and pray the Merciful Lord accepts our humble and weak efforts, forgives us our shortcomings, and saves you, us, and all the believers from the torment of the Hell Fire. Ameen.

The literal meaning of ‘fatwa’ is a ruling or an opinion that is derived from the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws); and the ‘Mufti’ is the one who gives this ruling.

Unfortunately, both these terms ‘Muftis’ and ‘fatwas’ have today taken on a meaning of their own in colloquial terms; and today it might seem that only one recognized by some government or authority is given the title of ‘Mufti’, and only these ‘Muftis’ can deliver ‘fatwas’!

Your Question: Are your answers to be considered fatwas? If they are fatwas, isn`t it required that only a Mufti can issue fatwas?"

We neither claim that we are ‘muftis’, nor do we claim that we deliver ‘fatwas’; nor is it our mission to be known by titles or designations. We are nothing, but humble students in this endless ocean of knowledge called ‘Al-Islam’, and our one and only aim is to earn the Pleasure of the Merciful by guiding people to the light of the Quran and the Sunnah.

Your Statement: Thank u for ur time

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 63 Surah Munafiqoon verse 11: But to no soul will Allah grant respite when the time appointed (for it) has come! And Allah is well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.

Allah says in the Holy Quran in Chapter 67 Surah Al Mulk verse 2: He (Allah) created death and life that He may test you, to see which of you is the best in deeds.

The Creator has appointed a fixed time for every soul, to see who amongst them does good and who does evil in this given period of time; then to Him is our final return. For the believers, who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day, ‘time’ is a precious commodity; and fortunate indeed are those who spend this bestowed time in the service and worship of their Lord.

We humbly beg and implore the Merciful Lord that He accept the ‘time’ you and us have spent in learning and understanding the deen, and include it amongst your and our good deeds in our Book of Records.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
