One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother, As-Salamu-Alaikum

I want to know bout red colour. I have heard from some one that our Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) did not like this colour. Is this true. Are we women forbidden to wear red colour. I tried to clarify and i came to know that women are allowed to wear this colour and can use things of this colour.

pls let me know as this is my favourite colour and i want to know about it.

Answer:

Is color red Prohibited

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

There is absolutely no evidence that the Messenger of Allah (saws) disliked the color red; and there is absolutely no evidence that the Messenger of Allah (saws) ever forbade the believing woman to wear red color clothes. The color that the Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade the believers (men and women) is the saffron color; or any other color that specifically connotes the religion of the pagans. The color most loved by Allah and His Messenger (saws) is white.

Abu Dharr reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "The best thing that one can use to change the color of grey hairs is henna and katm (a reddish dye)." Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

Ibn 'Umar reported: "Allah's Messenger (saws) forbade women pilgrims from wearing gloves, veils, and clothes dyed with saffron or warse. (A sweet smelling plant that was used to dye clothes yellow) Besides these, they may wear anything else, any color, silk clothes, ornaments, trousers, or a shirt or shoes." Reported by Abu Daw'ud, Al-Baihaqi and Al-Hakim.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4057 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As

The Messenger of Allah (saws) saw me. I think I wore a garment dyed with a reddish yellow colour. He asked: What is this? So I went and burnt it. The Prophet (saws) said: What have you done with your garment? I replied: I burnt it. He (saws) said: Why did you not give it to one of your women to wear?

The Messenger of Allah (saws) specifically prohibited the believers from wearing saffron color clothes. Other than that, all other colors are permissible.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
