One of our brothers/sisters has asked
this question:
Assalamo alaikum,
My question is I am reading a book called "when the
moon split into two" by darussalam, in which it is written that after
"badr" when non believers bodies were thrown in the well, mohammad
saw called them by their names then sahaba ask him ( saw ) about this,
mohammad saw said that dead person can listen but cant reply, when their soul
rest in "barzakh" and they cannot interact with anything then how can
they listen. pls explain.
If ones doubt gets clear, one is more inclined towards
din.

Answer:
The prophet (saws)
spoke to dead after badr
In the name of Allah,
We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah
guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide
them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah
Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the
seal of His Messengers.
In light of the Guidance of the
Quran and the Sunnah, it is indeed true that once a person dies and his soul is
captured by the Angel of death and deposited in the ‘barzakh’, neither the
deceased soul can interact with the human beings on earth, nor can the human
beings on earth interact with the deceased soul in any way whatsoever.
It is also indeed true that the
Messenger of Allah (saws) addressed some of the deceased pagans by name after
the
Sahih Al-Bukhari
Hadith 5.317 Narrated by Ibn Umar
The Prophet (saws)
stood at the well of Badr (which contained the corpses of the pagans) and said,
"Have you found true what your Lord promised you?" Then he (saws)
further said, "They now hear what I say." This was mentioned before
Hadrat Aisha (r.a.) and she said, "But the Prophet (saws) said, 'Now they
know very well that what I used to tell them was the Truth.' - Then she recited: "You cannot make the dead hear...(till the end of
Verse)." (30.52)
Sahih Al-Bukhari
Hadith 2.452 Narrated by Ibn Umar
The Prophet (saws)
looked at the people of the well (the well in which the bodies of the pagans
killed in the Battle of Badr were thrown) and said, "Have you found true
what your Lord promised you?" Somebody said to him, "You are
addressing dead people." He (saws) replied, "You do not hear better
than they but they cannot reply."
That the Prophet (saws)
addressed the deceased pagans by name after every battle was not the norm, but
this specific incident was out of the ordinary and a miracle whereby Allah
Subhanah allowed the Messenger of Allah (saws) to address the deceased pagans
killed in the battle of Badr….as this being the first battle of Islam, its
results had far-reaching consequences not only for the pagans of Arabia but
also for the believers.
Allah Says in the Holy
Quran Chapter 35 Surah Fatir Verse 22:
22 Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead. Allah can make any that He wills to hear;
but thou cannot make those to hear who are (buried) in their graves!
