Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamualaikum

Would you kindly please allow me to ask two questions?

1) May I please first ask what the differece between a "Darood" and a "Surah" is and could you please refer me a site from where I can learn more of those?

2) Can reciting surahs and daroods in certain ways help to heal (both physically and mentally) - please refer to the links below? Could it also be a way to find progress or stop any hardships? If yes then would you please refer me any sites from where I can learn these suras and darood that can help relieve pain and other ways to heal/progress?

Answer:

Difference between durood and surah

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: May I please first ask what the differece between a "Darood" and a "Surah"

A ‘Surah’ is a combination and compilation of a number of ‘Aayahs’ or ‘Verses’ of the Glorious Quran as determined by Allah Subhanah, and made known to the believers by the Last and Final Messenger of Allah (saws). The Glorious Quran consists of 114 Surahs, the shortest of which is the 108th Surah Al-Kauthar (only 3 Aayahs) and the longest is the 2nd Surah Al-Baqarah (286 Aayahs).

The ‘durood’ on the other hand is the specific salutation and supplication which the believers make for the Messenger of Allah (saws).

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 56:

56 Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect.

Al-Muwatta Hadith 9.70

Yahya related from Malik from Nuaym ibn Abdullah al-Mujmirthat, Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zayd told him that Abu Masud al Ansari said, "The Messenger of Allah (saws) came to us at the gathering of Sad ibn Ubada. Bashir ibn Sad said to him, 'Allah has ordered us to ask for blessings on you, O Messenger of Allah (saws). How should we do it?' The Messenger of Allah (saws), remained silent until we wished we had not asked him. Then he (saws) told us to say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, and give baraka to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You gave baraka to Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. In all the worlds You are worthy of Praise and Glorious,'"

When Allah Subhanah Commanded the believers to send the ‘durood’ or pray the salutation on Prophet Mohamed (saws), the companions of the Messenger of Allah came to him and asked him how should they obey the command of Allah Subhanah. And the Messenger of Allah (saws) taught them the ‘durood’, which is prayed by the believers till today, and until the end of time; Insha Allah.

Your Question: …..Can reciting surahs and daroods in certain ways help to heal (both physically and mentally) - please refer to the links below? Could it also be a way to find progress or stop any hardships? If yes then would you please refer me any sites from where I can learn these suras and darood that can help relieve pain and other ways to heal/progress?

Beloved brother in Islam, the main purpose of the Divine Revelation of the Quran was not to cure physical ailments of mankind, but rather the Glorious Message of the Quran was revealed by the Lord Most Merciful as a complete Guidance to ‘Straight Path’ to cure the spiritual ailments of mankind.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 185:

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down: this Book is a Perfect Guidance for mankind and consists of clear Teachings which show the Right Way, and are a Criterion of the Truth and falsehood.

But because the Quran are the Very Words of the Lord All-Mighty, they overflow in the sublime Message of Blessings and Mercy for those who accept and submit to its guidance.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 10 Surah Yunus verse 57:

57 O mankind! There hath come to you a direction (The Quran) from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts and for those who believe a Guidance and a Mercy.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 82:

82 We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 41 Surah Fusselat verse 44:

44 Had We sent this as a Qur'an (in a language) other than Arabic they would have said: "Why are not its verses explained in detail? What? (A Book) not in Arabic and (a Messenger) an Arab?" Say: "It is a guide and a healing to those who believe; and for those who believe not there is a deafness in their ears and it is blindness in their (eyes); they are (as it were) being called from a place far distant!"

Allah Subhanah Declares that the Quran is a ‘healing for the diseases in your hearts’; but the diseases referred to here are the spiritual diseases of disbelief, polytheism, hyprocisy, etc. and not the physical diseases like cancer, etc.

There is no person who ever walked on this planet earth who understood and implemented the commands of the Glorious Quran better than the person of the Noble Messenger of Allah (saws). When anyone has a physical ailment, the Messenger of Allah (saws) recommended that they keep their trust in Allah and get treatment by the best medical expert of their times… never did it happen that he (saws) would cure the physical ailments of the believers by reciting any Surah from the Quran!

There is absolutely no doubt that the Quran is full of Blessings and Mercy and Healing of the spiritual diseases of mankind for those who believe in it; but it does not behove the believers, from themselves, to assign a particular Surah or Surahs as a remedy for a particular disease when such a remedy is not endorsed by the Messenger of Allah (saws).

Thus brother, the best remedy for the physical ailments one experiences is to seek help and treatment from the experts in the field of medicine, and remain constant in their supplications to their Lord Most Merciful to alleviate their sufferings; and if one’s physical ailment or disease is severe or painful, one of the best supplications to make is the one made by the Noble Prophet Ayyub (a.s.) when in distress:

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 21 Surah Anbiyaa verses 83-84:

83 And (remember) Ayyub, when he cried to his Lord "Truly distress has seized me, but Thou art the Most Merciful of those that are merciful."

84 So We listened to him: We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his people to him, and doubled their number as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration for all who serve Us.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
