Can a muslim swear on the quran

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Would would a muslim have to do if he is asked to swear on the Quran whether he commited a sin or not. ( example : drinking alcohol or having sex ) taking into consideration that he have done the sin. Should he accept to swear and if yes can he swear on the untruth ???

Answer:

Can a muslim swear on the quran?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Firstly, one must only swear on the Being of Allah Subhanah and not on anything else.

Under no circumstances should one ever take a false oath on Allah Subhanah. If one takes a false swear on Allah Subhanah, it is indeed a grave sin and he/she must immediately put things right and turn to Allah Subhanah and seek sincere repentance and Taubah.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 77:As for those who barter away their Covenant with Allah and their oaths for a paltry profit, they shall have no share in the Hereafter! Allah will not speak to them, nor even look at them, nor cleanse them of their sins on the Day of Resurrection. There is a painful punishment in store for them.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.9 Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr

The Prophet (saws) said, "Al-Kaba'ir (the biggest sins) are: To join others (as partners) in worship with Allah, to be undutiful to one's parents, and to take a false oath."

But if one is innocent of an accusation, and is challenged to take an oath on Allah Subhanah that he did not commit such and such an act, there is absolutely no harm in taking the oath to prove one’s innocence.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
