One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

dear brother, thanku so much for this wonderful forum yet again. about eid-ul-azha, there is a common norm that the animal for slaughter, specially goats, can be bought according to how much they weigh. a typical goat would weigh 40-50 kilos and you can buy the goat by paying per kilo. but is this jaiz according to islam. i have heard that this way of buying an animal for qurbani is not recommended. please enlighten. regards,

Answer:

Can one buy goats of sacrifice by kilos

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

There is absolutely no harm if one buys a goat by kilo, or by any other means. The important thing here is the intention that one has for the sacrifice. The intention of the one who truly believes in Allah and the Last Day, must be to earn and win the Pleasure and Good Will of his Lord and Creator by following this Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws). If one’s intention is correct and pure, then Allah has promised a great reward for the sacrifice.

One has to be careful not to make the sacrificial animal a show of pride, wealth, and competition; whereby he buys the most expensive and grandest animal, and parades it in front of his friends and neighbors, and competes with the other believers on who has the best animal for sacrifice. This person is obviously more interested in making a show for himself and his wealth; rather than earning the Pleasure and Good Will of Allah Subhanah.

One must be extremely humble, and sacrifice the best animal/s he can afford; and humbly beg and supplicate Allah Subhanah to accept his humble sacrifice; for Allah Subhanah loves those who show humility to their Lord.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
