One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I am not married and i masturburate often thinking about women which is a biggest sin but my question is "is it compulsary that i have to do gusul after masturburation because i did not have intercoure ...it is just that the liquid came out which just poped out and did not touch any part of my body...and that dirt came out completely still should i have to take bath.."?

Answer:

Ghusl after sperm mani

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: …."is it compulsary that i have to do gusul after masturburation because i did not have intercoure

Ali ibn Ali Taalib (r.a.) reported that the Prophet (saws)said "If ‘mani’ (full sexual discharge or sperm) is ejaculated, perform the ‘ghusl’ (full bath of purification)."

Discharge of al-Mani owing to stimulation while asleep or awake

The opinion of the jurists in general is that ghusl is a must should one have a discharge of al-mani (sperm) owing to stimulation while asleep or awake.

Abu Saeed reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say, "’Ghusl’ is needed after (ejaculation of) ‘mani’."

Related by Muslim.

Umm Salamah reported that Umm Sulaim said, "O Messenger of Allah (saws), Allah is not ashamed of the Truth. Does a woman have to perform ‘ghusl’ if she has a wet dream?" He (saws) said, "Yes, if she sees the liquid."

Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

If one experiences a state of ‘mani’ (full sexual discharge or release of sperm), absolutely regardless of whether one is awake or sleeping (wet-dream), regardless of whether one has performed full sexual intercourse or not, all the scholars and the jurists in Islam are absolutely unanimous in their opinion that a ‘ghusl’ or full bath of purification would be absolutely necessary and obligatory before one can make themselves available for prayer.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
