Could
you please let me know if it is permissible to use an inhaler for sufferers of
asthma during the holy month of Ramadhan. In my family there are a number of
people who have asthma and wanted to know if you were allowed to use your
inhaler during the fast or if you had to use it before sehri and after iftarhi.
Also if someone with asthma really needed to use the inhaler due to difficulty
with breathing while fasting, will this break their fast?
Could
you also please tell me if nicotine patches, to help in stop smoking can be
used during Ramadhan or will they break the fast?

Answer:
Asthma inhaler fast
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
The things which break or violate one’s fast are:
- Intentional eating
- Intentional drinking
- Sexual intercourse
- voluntary semen discharge
- the menstruation of the woman while fasting
The vast majority of the scholars and the jurists in Islam
are of the opinion that usage of an inhaler by one suffering from asthma does
not violate one’s fast in the least.
Smoking, without an iota of a doubt is an evil habit, and
the believers must strive to abstain from all things which is harmful to one’s
health. If one uses nicotine patches to
help them kick this evil habit, the scholars are of the opinion that such
patches do not violate or invalidate one’s fast in the least.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.
