Answer:

Stand and Drink Zam Zam

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

In normal circumstances, the guidance and Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) is that the believers should drink or eat while in a seated position. But if the place is unclean, or if one is in a place where it is not possible to sit down; there is no harm if one eats or drinks while standing. In normal circumstances the Messenger of Allah (saws) always sat down when eating or drinking; but it is also reported that sometimes he ate and drank while in a standing position.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.701 Narrated by Ibn Abbas

I gave Zam-Zam water to Allah's Messenger (saws), and he drank it while standing.

It is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) that he would drink the ‘zam-zam’ water while in a standing position. The wisdom behind standing and drinking the ‘zam-zam’ would be difficult to comprehend at the time of the Prophet (saws); but today the wisdom seems evident. In the period of Hajj and the month of Ramadan, there are so many worshippers in the Sacred Mosque, that if one was guided to sit and drink ‘zam-zam’, he would put himself in harms way because of the crowds, etc.

Thus although one is generally guided to be seated while eating or drinking, it would indeed be considered a Sunnah of the Prophet (saws) to stand and drink the water from the well of zam-zam.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
