Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother,

I am a mail sporting long hair (shoulder length).

There is no specific reason for this, except that I like to have long hair. There is no intention of resembling women (I am straight), nor does my hair

resemble that of a woman, except that it is long.

Though many people have told me that it is not correct to sport long hair, I have consulted & found that even the Prophet(PBUH) did sport hair of a

considerable length, as per the ways during his time.

My question: Is there any specific verse in the Quran, or the Hadith, prohibiting long hair?

Awaiting your clarification.

Salaam.

Answer:

Long Hair Male

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.751 Narrated by Al Bara

The Prophet was of moderate height having broad shoulders (long) hair reaching his ear-lobes. Once I saw him in a red cloak and I had never seen a more handsome man than him."

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws) did indeed keep his hair on his head long reaching upto his ear-lobes. There is absolutely nothing in the Quran or Sunnah which prohibits a believing male from keeping long hair, if he wishes to do so.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
