As salam alaikum
Dear brother in Islam
Questions on zakat
I was having some questions regarding zakat
and was just going through your site, for some I got the answers but still I am
unclear regarding a few of them.
First of all let me brief you my current
status, right now I am staying away from my parents, they are in
Here I stay in a rented house, with very less
expense and as such able to save a good portion of my salary alhamdolillah.
I am not having any property as such in my
name, only purchased some jewelleries etc for my mother, sister and my fiancé.
Please guide me whether I am supposed to pay
any zakat and if yes than how much and to whom?
May ALLAH bless us all
Amen

Answer:
Zakah determination
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is no one (no idol, no person, no
grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai,
nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
In principle, zakah is to be paid every year on the nett
worth (assets less the liabilities) of every individual after it has been in
his possession for a period of one calendar year.
Your Question: Please guide me whether I am supposed to
pay any zakat and if yes than how much and to whom?
From your note it seems that your nett worth is above the
‘nisab’ (minimum level of wealth), and you are liable to pay the zakah on the
savings which have been in your possession for a period of one calendar
year. If you have already given the
jewelry to your mother, sister or fiancé, it belongs to them and they are
liable to pay the zakah on it; but if you have purchased it and you intend to
give it to them at a later date, then the jewelry will be considered amongst
your property and you must pay the zakah on it, provided it has been in your
possession for a period of one calendar year.
Your Question: and if yes than how much
Zakah calculation will be 2.5% of the total value of your
cash savings plus the jewelry that is in your possession for a period of once
calendar year.
Your Question: to whom?
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah
Taubah verse 60: Alms are for the poor and the needy and
those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been
(recently) reconciled (to truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the Cause
of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is
full of knowledge and wisdom.
Zakah can be spent on any of the categories listed in the
above Aayah of Surah Taubah, or in any Cause of Allah Subhanah. Except for building a mosque and spending on
those who are one’s direct responsibility (wife, children, parents, etc.), the
zakah dues can be spent in any Cause of Allah Subhanah.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.
Your Brother in Islam,
Burhan
