Selling swine products

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Asalam-o-Alaikulm

My Dad has recently set up a fast food franchise which sells rolls and sandwiches. Some of the fillings of the rolls are Pork, Bacon, Meatballs etc which are all haram. Is it ok for my Dad to be selling these products even though we ourselves do not eat it but the products still need to be touched. They are usually touched with gloves. I would like to know if this is a sin to do such a thing as selling haram meat products. My Dad has tried to change the food to Halal but there are no relevant suppliers who are willing to send products.

Answer:

Selling swine products

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 145: Say: "I find not in the Message received by me by inspiration any (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine; for it is an abomination. Or what is impious (meat) on which a name has been invoked other than Allah's." But (even so) if a person is forced by necessity without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits; thy Lord is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Dear and Beloved Brother in Islam, the principle in Islam is that when Allah and His Messenger (saws) have declared a thing ‘haraam’ or forbidden, then the selling, or buying, or trading, or even facilitating the usage of any of the haraam products would be considered forbidden in the sight of Shariah.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2829 Narrated by Ali ibn AbuTalib

Ali heard Allah's Messenger (saws) invoke the curse of Allah on those who took usury, those who paid it, those who recorded it, and those who refused to give sadaqah.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2776 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (saws) invoked the curse of Allah on ten people in connection with ‘khamr’ (intoxicants, wine, alcohol, etc.): the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought.

Just as the earnings of everything associated with the facilitation of the haraam products like ‘riba’ (usury) and ‘khamr’ (intoxicants) are forbidden, the earnings from selling or trading anything that contains swine or pork will also be deemed as forbidden or haraam in Islam.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
