Is acting, modeling allowed?
Mu' meneen
Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa
Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be
upon all of you)
One of our
brothers/sisters has asked this question:
Jazakallah-kheir, for this wonderful site...
I have a question:
I am still doing my secondary education and i still haven`t thought of an occupation for the future...
I am a male.
Is it permittable for me to get in the entertainment
industry, be it acting, 3D effects in movies, director of a movie, producer
etc.
Acting, as long as not wearing clothes which are haram or not involving women,
like dancing or movie-like things...
Secondly, is it haram to do modelling, for guys as
long as they don`t wear revealing clothes...
Lastly, can guys fashion design clothes, for women even if the clothes are
revealing?
Jazakallah
kheir for taking your time in answering my questions.

Answer:
Is acting, modeling allowed?
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is no one (no idol, no person, no
grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai,
nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Q-1: Is it permittable for me to get in
the entertainment industry, be it acting, 3D effects in movies, director of a
movie, producer etc.
Acting in movies or theaters, directing, producing, or applying the
knowledge of technology in movie making in itself are not forbidden in Islam,
provided one uses his skills for spreading good ideas and knowledge and stays
within the boundaries laid down by Allah and His Messenger (saws).
But if one takes on acting, or directing, or producing the
movies which condone ‘fahesha’ (indecency), or lies,
or evil, etc.; it would indeed be a sin in the sight of Allah Subhanah.
Q-2: Secondly, is it haram to do modelling, for guys as long as they don`t
wear revealing clothes...
Wearing and displaying clothes that would encourage its sale, or
modeling, in itself is not forbidden in Islam,
provided the person:
- does
not display his ‘satr’ (from his navel to his
knees inclusive)
- does
not wear clothes that copy women clothing
- does
not display arrogance
- does
not copy a pagan culture or people
If one is able to model the clothes and stay within the
boundaries of Shariah, there is no harm.
But if one takes the modern term ‘modelling’
to mean trying to sell clothes, and walk down catwalks with half-naked women by
his side…that would be considered absolutely impermissible in Islam.
Q-3: Lastly, can guys fashion design clothes, for women even if
the clothes are revealing?
There is no harm if men design or sell women clothes, even if they are
revealing; for it is absolutely permissible for the women to wear revealing
clothes in the presence of her husband.
If the woman decides to wear revealing clothes in public, the burden of
sin is upon her; not the designer.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.
Your Brother in Islam,
