Meaning of Surah Maidah Verses 33-34

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 33-34: The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main to spread mischief in the land is this: they should be put to death, or crucified, or their alternate hands and feet should be cut off, or they should be banished from the land. That is the disgrace and ignominy for them in the world, and there is in store for them a harsher punishment in the Hereafter. Except those, who repent before you have power over them; for you should know that Allah is Forgiving, Compassionate. Would the punishments prescribed in this Aya apply to someone who brings great dishonor, disrespect, and disgrace to Islam, by commiting crimes against the teachings of the Holy Quran?

Meaning of Surah Maidah Verses 33-34

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Would the punishments prescribed in this Aya apply to someone who brings great dishonor, disrespect, and disgrace to Islam, by commiting crimes against the teachings of the Holy Quran?

No, the punishment prescribed in the above aayah of Surah Maidah would not apply to one who brings great dishonor, disrespect and disgrace to Islam by committing crimes against the teachings of the Holy Quran. The punishment that would be applied to such a person in an Islamic society, would be the punishment of apostasy, which is death.

The punishment stated in the above aayah of Surah Maidah would apply in an Islamic society, to one who commits rebellion against the rightful Islamic government, or to those who commit highway robbery or armed robbery in an Islamic society.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
