One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

assalamualaikum, i have been in the habit of drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages for the past few years, i know its haram yet im addicted to it, however i have tried a lot and got rid of it and have not yet drunken for the past 6 months, yet i have the temptation for it, im fighting it with the fear of allah, my friends call me when there is a party, i tell a lie and avoid it because if i go there they will make me drink,is it fine to do like this?, i know we must not lie but is it fine to tell a lie for a good cause?, how should i deal with those people who drink?, or can i openly tell them that i will not drink?, also will allah forgive me for what i have done previously?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

MashaAllah , May Allah Subhanah reward you abundantly in this world and the Hereafter for your piety and for your zest and keenness to remain obedient to the guidance and the Laws and Boundaries of Allah Subhanah. Ameen

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 29:

O ye who believe!  Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good-will:   nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraat verse 157:(So,  now mercy has been assigned to those) who follow this Messenger,  the Gentile Prophet,  whose mention they shall find in the Torah and the Gospel with them.   He enjoins them to do good and forbids them from evil;  he makes pure things ‘halaal’ for them and impure things ‘haraam’;  he relieves them of their burdens and frees them from the shackles (of rites and rituals) that bound them.   For this reason,  those alone who believe in him,  support him,  succour him, and follow the Light that has been sent down with him shall attain true ‘success’.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3679 Narrated by Aisha

I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: "Every intoxicant is haraam; if a quantity of anything causes intoxication, a handful of it is (also) haraam."

If soft drinks and other drinks of similar category have alcohol amongst its contents, then indeed it would not be lawful for a believer to consume that product. For anything even 0.001% is Haraam.

You are right in your assumption that even if one get them alchohol free, they may cause serious health hazards , hence must be avoided if we fear Allah swt.

Now to your specific Question ...

Every sin of the sons of Adam a.s. is forgiveable if one begs Allah swt for His mercy and forgiveness and makes sincere taubah and takes a solemn oath not to repeat that sin again.

Every time you slip and fall into sin  you should immediately make taubah and beg forgiveness and make an effort not to sin again.

A believer never despairs of Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.116         Narrated by Abdullah

The Prophet (saws) said, "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar!"

It would neither behove nor befit nor would it be in alignment with the character of a believer, who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, to utter a lie.

Beloved Brother , it would be best, purest, and closer to piety and righteousness if you abstain from attending any such parties or gatherings. To make sure your family and friends understands your position, it would be prudent to call or visit them  before the party and explain with absolute humility, wisdom and politeness why you are unable to join them; if you explain with humility, politeness and wisdom, it is expected that they will appreciate your honesty and piety and will not only excuse you from attending it, but maybe you might be able to instill the fear of Allah into their hearts and they stop using harmful drinks and food in the future.

In any case, a believer who sincerely fears and believes in Allah and the Last Day does not and should not willingly disobey Allah and His Messenger (saws) only to please fellow human beings!

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3696 Narrated by An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the Creator."

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
