Answer:

Obligatory to recite kalima at Death

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Dear and Beloved Brother in Islam, if one has believed in Allah and His Last Messenger (saws), lived his life fearing Allah and the Last Day, and died as a believer worshipping none save Allah Subhanah….but for some reason was unable to recite the ‘shahaadah’ or testimony of faith at his moment of death, it is absolutely untrue and inconceivable that such a good person will be amongst the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment only because he was unable to recite the ‘shahaadah’ or testimony of faith at his precise moment of death!

On the Day of Judgment, The Lord Most High, Most Merciful will Judge each and every individual with Absolute Justice regarding their faith, their belief, and their deeds….and none will be wronged in the least. Just because one who lived his life and died as a true believer was unable to recite the ‘shahaadah’ at his precise moment of death will not by itself make him a disbeliever in the Sight of Allah Subhanah.

But on the other hand, if one who lived his whole life as an ardent disbeliever but at his ‘saqaraat’ or when face to face with the reality of death, were to declare the ‘shahaadah’ or testimony of faith….his faith will not be accepted by Allah Subhanah!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 10 Surah Yunus verses 90-91:

90 We took the Children of Israel across the sea: Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length when overwhelmed with the flood he (the Pharoah) said: "I believe that there is no god except Him Whom the Children of Israel believe in: I am of those who submit (to Allah in Islam)."

91 (It was said to him): "Aah!!! Now?? But a little while before wast thou (O Pharoah) in rebellion! And thou didst mischief (and violence)!”

The evil Pharoah lived his whole life in rebellion of Allah and His Messengers, but when he saw death in front of him, he immediately declared the testimony of faith….but Allah Subhanah Declares in His Glorious Quran that Pharaoh’s testimony of faith, once he had reached the ‘saqaraat’ was not acceptable to Allah Subhanah.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale-Imraan verse 102:

102 O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except as a ‘muslim’.

Although it is the wish and desire of every true believer that he be given the opportunity to declare the testimony of faith upon his last breath, if one who has lived one’s life as a true believer for some reason is unable to declare the ‘shahaadah’ at his precise moment of death; it is expected that the Lord Most Gracious Most Merciful will raise him on the Day of Judgment amongst the believers.

On the contrary, if one has lived his whole life as a disbeliever and only when faced with the reality of certain death were to simply declare the testimony of faith….the testimony and faith of such a person will be totally rejected by Allah Subhanah, and such a person will be, without an iota of a doubt, amongst the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
