Answer:

Overslept fajr prayers

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 447 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

We proceeded with the Messenger of Allah (saws) on the occasion of al-Hudaybiyyah. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘Who will keep watch for us?’ Bilal said: ‘I (shall do).’ They all overslept till the sun arose. The Prophet (saws) awoke and said: ‘Do as you used to do (i.e. offer prayer as usual).’ Then we did accordingly. He (saws) said: ‘Anyone who oversleeps or forgets (prayer) should do similarly.’

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 444 Narrated by Amr ibn Umayyah ad-Damri

We were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (saws) during one of his journeys. He (saws) overslept abandoning the morning prayer until the sun had arisen. The Messenger of Allah (saws) awoke and said: ‘Go away from this place.’ He (saws) then commanded Bilal to call for prayer. He called for prayer. They (the people) performed ablution and offered two rak'ahs of the morning prayer (Sunnah prayer). He (saws) then commanded Bilal (to utter the iqamah, i.e. to summon the people to attend the prayer). He (Bilal) announced the iqamah, and the Prophet (saws) led them in the morning prayer.

Sahih Muslim Hadith 1448 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah

When the Messenger of Allah (saws) returned from the expedition to Khaybar, he (saws) travelled one night and stopped for rest when he became sleepy. He (saws) told Bilal to remain on guard during the night while the Messenger of Allah (saws) and his companions slept. When the time for dawn approached Bilal leaned against his camel facing the direction from which the dawn would appear. However he was overcome by sleep while he was leaning against his camel, and neither the Messenger of Allah (saws), nor Bilal, nor anyone else among his Companions rose until the sun shone on them. Allah's Messenger (saws) was the first of them to awake and, being startled, he (saws) called to Bilal who said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (saws)! May my father and mother be offered as ransom for thee, the same thing overpowered me which overpowered you (sleep).’ The Prophet (saws) then said: ‘Lead the beasts on (meaning continue the journey).’ So they led their camels to some distance. The Messenger of Allah (saws) then performed ablution and gave orders to Bilal who pronounced the Iqamah and then led them in the morning prayer. When he (saws) finished the prayer he said: ‘When anyone forgets the prayer, he should observe it when he remembers it.’

Your Question: I missed my fajar - morning prayers, as i overslept. I got up as the sun was rising. What is to be done in such situation?

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 3.114a

Ali reported that the Prophet (saws) said: "The pen is raised for three groups [of people--that is, they will not be responsible for their actions: the insane until they become sane, those who are sleeping until they awaken, and the young until they reach puberty."

Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and at-Tirmidhi.

Abu Qatadah related that sleeping through the prayer time was mentioned to the Prophet (saws), and he (saws) said, "There is no negligence in sleep, but negligence occurs while one is awake. If one of you forgets a prayer or sleeps through its time, then he should pray it when he remembers it."

Recorded by an-Nasa'i and at-Tirmidhi.

Anas related that the Prophet (saws), said, "Whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when he remembers it, and there is no expiation for it save that." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

If one slept with the intention to wake up and offer one’s obligatory fajr prayers on time, but due to some reason overslept, should wait until the sun has completely risen, perform the two-rakah Sunnah prayer, and then perform the two-rakah obligatory prayer of fajr; it is expected that their Lord Most Merciful will accept their worship and not diminish their reward in the least.

If one has overslept at fajr and woken up only when the sun is rising, one should wait until the sun has completely risen and only then start their delayed fajr prayers, for it is forbidden for the believers to pray when the sun is rising until it has completely risen, when the sun is at its zenith at mid-day, and when the sun in setting until it has completely set.

Amr ibn Abbas related that he said, "O Prophet of Allah (saws), inform me about the prayers." He (saws) said, "Pray the morning prayer, and then abstain from prayer until sunrise and the sun has completely risen, for it rises between the horns of Shaitaan. That is when the unbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, as your prayer will be witnessed and attended to until the shadow of a spear becomes less than its length. At that time stop praying, for at that time the hell-fire is fed with fuel. When the shade comes, you may pray, for your prayer will be witnessed and attended (to by angels) until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then abstain from praying until the sun sets, for its sets between the horns of Shaitaan, and that is when the unbelievers make prostrations to it." (Related by Ahmad and Muslim.)

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
