How to pray fard and other sunnah?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

As salam u alaikum,
Presently I am working in Saudi Arabia, yesterday I have seen the very strange thing of praying namaz. One of my collegue missed the zuhr prayer (with Jamat) and now he wants to pray the namaz alone, another collegue said we both will pray as he already prayed the zuhr with jamat. i asked u already prayed then he said i am praying 4 sunnah which i didnt prayed and they started praying together and the man who already prayed zuhr fard did Imamat and other who has to pray the zuhr fard stands behind him. I asked to other them they said one can pray sunnah and the other can pray fard with the same jamat but the neeyah should be different each person can perform with their neeyah. As i was very confused how can they pray like this? is this permissible to pray like this one can pray sunnah and another is praying fard or nafl?

How to pray fard and other sunnah?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Abu Sa' id narrates that a man entered the Mosque, and the Prophet (saws) and his companions had already prayed. The Prophet (saws) said: "Who will give charity to him by praying with him?" So, a man from the people stood and prayed with him. Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Tirmidhi.

Beloved brother in Islam, there is absolutely no harm if one who has already prayed his ‘fard’ prayer to join or lead a brother who could not join the congregation, in another congregation so that the brother who missed the congregation may get a full reward for his praying his prayer in congregation.

There is absolutely no harm if one brother in the same congregation makes the intention to pray his missed ‘fard’ prayer, and the other who has already prayed the ‘fard’ makes intention to pray his ‘nafl’ or voluntary prayers. This is a perfectly legal and acceptable way for one who has missed the ‘fard’ congregation to offer his prayer in congregation so that he may get a full reward for his prayers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.618 Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "The prayer in congregation is twenty seven times superior to the prayer offered by person alone."

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
