As-salam-walekum,
I am a regular reader of your emails.
I have a question ?
I am working in a Travel agency and our company has a
policy to keep 1% on all personal travel bookings of our clients. But
normally i charge more than 1% commission from our client and after paying 1%
to the company, i keep the balance commission with me. Is it HALAAL or HARAM in
Islam, pls let me know ?
Please revert on this as i am confused after seeing your
question no.369-2338.
Waiting for reply.
Best wishes for your site.

Answer:
Keeping
commission halaal or haraam
In the name of Allah, We praise
Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none
can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam,
no dai, nobody!) worthy of
worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His
slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Beloved brother in Islam, we seek your forgiveness and the forgiveness of Allah Subhanah, if due to the shortcoming in our writing, we caused any sort of misunderstanding or confusion on the subject.

If you have an agreement with your company that after paying them the 1% commission you may keep the balance commission that is charged to the clients, there is absolutely no harm in your keeping the balance amount.
But if one does not have an
agreement with the company one works for regarding the keeping of the balance
commission, and one pockets this money without the company’s precise approval;
then this income would be absolutely forbidden for the one who sincerely
believes in Allah and the Last Day. In
the absence of such an agreement with the company, the worker should either
give the discount back to the customer, or give the full commission to the
company he works for. Unless and until
he has precise approval from the management of the company to pocket the extra
commission he charges from the customer, that commission would not be
permissible for the believer.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
Your Brother in Islam,
Burhan
