Open Shoes For a Muhajjaba

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Al Salam Alaikom Wa Rahmat Allah Wa Barakatoh,

I am a 29 year old Muhajjaba, al hamdulillah. I suffered a Pulmonary Embolism after giving birth to my first child back in 2008. I was advised against having another child but when I became pregnant with my 2nd child I refuse to abort him and al hamdulillah they are both well and healthy. My question concerns myself. My Pulmonary Embolism is believed to be a complication resulting from Deep Vein Thrombosis in my legs. It's a blood clot that formed in my legs and travelled up to my lungs, which should have been fatal hadn't Allah protected me. I am prone to this happening again and have been advised to adhere to a certain life-long diet, limit certain medications, exercise and against wearing socks whenever possible. I currently do wear socks when I go out but every summer my legs swell badly and I become in a lot of pain. This summer I feel my case is worse and so I was wondering if it would be OK for me not to wear socks with my shoes? I do not intend on wearing sandals or any open shoes, just normal slip on ones ... the aim is not to exhibit my feet but rather to be cautious regarding my health. I tried different kinds of socks (ankle, hijab socks, knee high, full) and they all make my legs swell.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Wa Alaykum as Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakat

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah Verse 286:

286    On no soul doth Allah place a burden greater than it can bear.

Sister you have a genuine problem and your intentions are pure. What is the wisdom of one showing her feet when she is always mu-hajib. You need not worry whatsoever. You can wear slip-ons or sandals if you wish owing to your health problem. If you wish you can wear an abaya which is a little long, so that it covers your feet in most situations.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
