Where the imaam should stand for the funeral prayer

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As-Salaamu-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:
How should the deceased be placed in front of the imaam, i.e., where should the imaam stand in relation to the head or feet of the deceased?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The deceased should be placed in front of the imaam, and the imaam should stand at the head of a man and the middle of a woman, as described in the saheeh ahaadeeth narrated from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). If there are a number of dead, men, women and children, the men should be placed closest to the imaam, then boys, then women, then girls. The woman’s middle should be in line with the man’s head, so that the imaam will be standing in the correct position in relation to all of them, as prescribed in sharee’ah.
