What is the meaning of Aqiqa?

Meaning of Aqiqa

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol,  no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The root of the Arabic word Aqiqa is from ‘aqqa’,  which means to tear something,  or to spill the blood of something,  or to cut something.

Aqiqa is a term used in Islamic terminology for the act of sacrificing an animal for the pleasure of Allah Subhanah at the birth of a child,  as a token of our appreciation,  thankfulness,  gratitude and gratefulness at His Mercy, Bounty and Blessing.

Similarly,  Salaah actually means to supplicate someone.   But it has become a term in Islamic terminology as the actual act of prayer,  where one says takbeer,  does qiyaam,  does rukuh,  does sujood,  and sits in a particular manner as taught by the Prophet of Allah (saws).

Similarly,  ‘sawn’ (or fasting) means to stop oneself from something.   But it has become a term in Islamic terminology as an act for fasting from dawn to dusk in a prescribed manner.

Thus Aqiqa has also become a term in Islamic terminology.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother & well-wisher in Islam,

Burhan
