Answer:

Meaning of names

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The literal meaning of the Arabic term ‘Abdul’ is ‘a slave of…’, and it simply does not befit a believer to be a subservient slave of anyone except Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds. Thus brother if at all one wishes to use ‘Abdul’ in assigning a name for a believer, it must be followed by one of the Blessed Names or Attributes of Allah Subhanah like Rahmaan (The Most Merciful), Hakeem (The Most Wise), Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving), Khaliq (The Creator), etc.

The advice given by your friends is absolutely accurate and if at all you wish to affix ‘Abdul’ in the full name, then it should be followed only by one of the Blessed Names of Allah Subhanah. Alternatively you could substitute the ‘Abdul’ in the names chosen by you with the term ‘Abdullah’.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
