One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Burhan Brother,

I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU WHICH ONE IS BETTER OR MORE PROFITABLE LISTNING OF HOLY QURAN OR RECITE HOLY QURAN.

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Which is better listen or recite Quran

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraf verse 204:

When the Quran is recited to you, listen to it with attention and keep silent. It may be that you also are blessed with mercy.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumar verses 17-18:

17 Those who eschew evil and fall not into its worship and turn to Allah (in repentance) for them is Good News: so announce the Good News to My servants

18 Those who listen to the Word (of Allah) and follow the best (meaning) in it: those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 83-85:

83 And when they listen to the Revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears for they recognize the Truth: they pray: "O Our Lord! We believe; write us down among the witnesses.

84 What cause can we have not to believe in Allah and the Truth which has come to us ,seeing that we long for our Lord to admit us to the company of the righteous?"

85 And for this their prayer hath Allah rewarded them with Gardens with rivers flowing underneath: their eternal home. Such is the recompense of those who do good.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verses 105-109:

105 We sent down the (Qur'an) in Truth and in Truth has it descended: and We sent thee but to give glad tidings (to the believers) and to warn (the sinners).

106 (It is) a Qur'an which We have divided (into parts from time to time) in order that thou might recite it to men at intervals: We have revealed it by stages.

107 Say: "Whether ye believe in it or not it is True that those who were given knowledge beforehand when it (The Quran) is recited to them fall down on their faces in humble prostration"

108 And say: "Glory to our Lord! Truly has the promise of our Lord been fulfilled!"

109 They fall down on their faces in tears and it increases their (earnest) humility.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.106 Narrated by Abdullah bin Masud

Allah's Messenger (saws) said to me, "Recite (of the Qur'an) for me," I said, "O Messenger of Allah (saws)! Shall I recite it to you although it had been revealed to you?" He (saws) said, "I like to hear (the Qur'an) from others." So I recited Surat-an-Nisa' till I reached: "…..How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?" (4.41) Then the Prophet (saws) said, "Stop!" And behold, his (saws) eyes were overflowing with tears!

In light of the above guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah, without an iota of a doubt, regardless of whether one chooses to recite or to listen to the recitation of the Quran, as long as one’s intention is to seek guidance from the Divine Verses of the Glorious Quran, one would be assured of receiving their due reward from their Lord Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
