Answer:

Dua when making wudu

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Al-Muhajir ibn Qanfadh reported that the Prophet (saws) said to him, "Nothing prevented me from returning (your salutations) except that I dislike to mention the (Blessed) Name of Allah Subhanah when I am impure (in the sate of major or ceremonial impurity).’

Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Ibn Khuzaimah.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) himself would remember Allah and make supplication every time he (saws) entered and exited the privy or toilets to relieve himself.

Anas reported that when the Messenger of Allah (saws) entered the privy to relieve himself, he (saws) would say, "In the name of Allah. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from male and female noxious beings (the Shayateen)."

This is related by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 359 Narrated by Aisha

When Allah's Messenger (saws) came out from the privy, he said: ‘(I seek) forgiveness from Thee, O Allah.’

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 374 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

When Allah's Messenger (saws) came out from the privy, he said: ‘Praise be to Allah Who has removed injurious things from me, and kept me in health.’

Although one has no control over one’s thoughts, the absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that one should abstain from declaring the Blessed Name of Allah Subhanah or doing any sort of ‘Dhikr’ verbally with their tongues when in the state of ceremonial or major impurity, or when one is in the state of actually answering the call of nature.

Secondly, there is absolutely no evidence in the authentic and established Sunnah that other than the declaration of ‘Bismillah’ the Messenger of Allah (saws) would recite any specific dua or supplication at the beginning or during the performance of the ‘wudu’. There is indeed evidence that he (saws) would make one of various supplications to Allah Subhanah after he had finished his ‘wudu’.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) supplicated Allah thus after he had completed his ‘wudu’, : “‘Allah hummaj alnee minat-tawwabeen, waj alnee minal mutah-tahereen’ (O Allah, make me one of those who constantly repents to You, and of those who purify themselves.)”

Abu Saeed Al Khudri narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “Whoever makes ‘wudu’ then says upon finishing his ‘wudu’: ‘Subhanaka Allah humma wa bihamdika, ashhadu anlaa ilaaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaik’ (Glory be to You O Allah, and all praise belongs to You; I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You. I seek Your Forgiveness, and I turn to You), it is written in a parchment, then sealed; and is not opened till the Day of Resurrection.”

Narrated Hadrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (r.a.) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: ‘None of you makes ‘wudu’ and completes the ‘wudu’, then says: “I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah Alone, He has no partners; and I bear witness that Mohamed is His slave-servant and His Messenger”, except that all eight Gates of Paradise are opened for him, so he may enter by whichever he pleases.’

Related by Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhee, An Nisaae, and Ibn Maajah.

In light of the above quoted guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws), the absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion there is absolutely no restriction or prohibition in Shariah if one wishes to fulfill their obligation of ‘wudu’ in a bathroom-cum-toilet. And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
