One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

ASAKWRB,

I have a question, why should we mention PBUH when our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) name is taken as we all know that after ALLAH, we people believe in what our Prophet has said and we follow, In Allah’s sight he is highly honored before all of us, what does it mean by PBUH or SAWS, is it compulsory if we take the name

of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) we should tell PBUH or Sallal la hu AWS, why this should be told and what is the reason behind it, as we all know he is the Greatest among all human beings and whole world knows it,  pls clarify this doubt.

Answer:

Why send durood on prophet(saws)

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: I have a question, why should we mention PBUH when our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) name is taken

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 56:

Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him and salute him with all respect.

A simple and straightforward answer regarding the question ‘why’ should the believers send salutations unto the Prophet (saws) whenever his name is mentioned would be because that is the Precise Command and Guidance of Allah Subhanah, the Lord and Creator of the Worlds!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 26 Surah Shuaraa verses 75-85:

75 He (Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.s)) said: "Do ye then see (the false deities) whom ye have been worshipping

76 Ye and your fathers before you?

77 For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;

78 Who created me and it is He Who guides me;

79 Who gives me food and drink

80 And when I am ill it is He Who cures me;

81 Who will cause me to die and then to live (again);

82 And Who I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment...

83 O my Lord! Bestow wisdom on me and join me with the righteous;

84 Grant me honorable mention on the tongue of truth among the later generations;

85 Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss.”

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 19 Surah Maryam verses 49-50:

49 When he (Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.)) had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We bestowed on him Ishaq and Yaqoob, and each one of them We made a Prophet.

50 And We bestowed of Our Mercy on them (Prophets Ibraheem (a.s.), Ishaq (a.s.), and Yaqoob (a.s.)), and We granted them lofty honor on the tongue of truth (the future generations of believers).

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 37 Surah Saafaat verses 78-81:

78 And We left (this blessing) for him (Prophet Nuh (a.s.)) among generations to come in later times:

79 "Peace and salutation to Nuh among the nations!"

80 Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

81 For he was one of Our believing servants.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 37 Surah Saafaat verses 129-131:

129 And We left (this blessing) for him (Prophet Elias (a.s.)) among generations (to come) in later times:

130 "Peace and salutation to such as Elias!"

131 Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

132 For He was one of Our believing servants.

Now regarding the wisdom why one is commanded and guided to send salutations to the Prophet (saws)…..

Without an iota of a doubt, Allah Subhanah has Promised time and time again in His Glorious Message that He will honor and bestow unimaginable rewards on His true believers on the Day of Judgment and in the eternal life of the Hereafter…..but there are a chosen few slave servants of The Most Gracious, who because of their deeds and their sacrifices in the Cause of Allah Subhanah are nominated by their Lord Most Bounteous to be honored not only in the Hereafter, but also till the end of time in this world itself!

One of the ways or methods of this superb and pristine honor of the Lord is that these chosen and righteous slave-servants of Allah Subhanah are granted ‘honorable mention’ by the tongues of the generations of believers to come till the end of time!

It is the unresolved dream and the ultimate wish of every ‘king’ or ‘leader’ in this world that he leaves behind him a legacy which will last the annuls of time! To fulfill this dream and wish of theirs, they build palaces like ‘The Buckingham Palace’ and the ‘Palace of Versailles’ etc, or they build monuments like the ‘Pyramids’ or the ‘Taj Mahal’ or the ‘Qutb Minar’, etc. It is possible that their legacy might last amongst the future generations as long as the monuments they had built may last…..but when Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds, desires and wishes to honor one amongst His chosen slaves in this world, He Commands and Guides all those who believe in Him and the Last Day, to sincerely love, respect, follow, and make an ‘honorable mention’ of these righteous and pious slaves of the Lord Most Majesic, Most Supreme! This honorable rank, and status, and honor, and legacy will remain secured in the hearts and upon the tongues of the believers till the end of time Insha Allah, and will far far outlast the comparative momentary legacy of the monuments built by the worldly kings and leaders!

Your Question: what does it mean by PBUH or SAWS,

‘(Pbuh)’ is the short form of ‘Peace be upon him (Prophet Mohamed (saws))’, and ‘(Saws)’ is the short for ‘Sall-Allah o Alayhe wa-Salaam’ (May the Blessings of Allah and Peace be upon him (Prophet Mohamed (saws)).

Your Question: is it compulsory if we take the name of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) we should tell PBUH or Sallal la hu AWS,

Allah Subhanah Himself and His Angels sends blessings on the Noble Prophet (saws), and The Lord Most High has commanded those who believe to also send their salutations unto their Prophet (saws)…..

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 56:

Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him and salute him with all respect.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (saws) said, "When any Muslim sends greetings upon me, Allah returns my soul to me so that I may respond to his greetings." (Related by Abu Dawud)

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (saws), "Do not turn my grave into a site of festivities, but send salutations to me for your salutations are raised to me wherever you might be." (Related by Abu Daw'ud)

Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-'As reported that he heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "If anyone invokes blessings upon me once, Allah will bestow blessings upon him ten times over."

Related by Muslim.

Ibn Masud reported that the Prophet (saws) said, "The people nearest to me on the Day of Judgment will be the ones most conscientious in invoking blessings upon me." Related by Tirmidhi.

Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet (saws) said, "May the nose of the person in whose presence I am mentioned be covered with dirt if he does not invoke blessings upon me.”

Related by Tirmidhi.

Abu Dharr al-Ghaffari narrated that the Prophet (saws) said, 'The most miserly amongst people is the one who fails to invoke blessings upon me when my name is mentioned in his or her presence.’

In light of the above quoted guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah, the absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that sending the salutations upon the Noble Prophet Mohamed (saws) every time his (saw’s) blessed name is mentioned in their presence is considered a ‘wajib’ or obligatory act in Shariah. And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
