One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear brother in muslim ,

refer to case #1496 your answer on question of Urinating while standing: I am a bit confused and unsatisfied with the answer, One of Ulama said that if one person Urinating while standing , he is commited a big sin and in afterlife we will get some punish from Allah SAW .

Please bear my confusion.

Wassalam

Answer:

Can one stand and urinate?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Under usual circumstances, it is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) that he would almost always urinate in a sitting position; but on some occasions, he (saws) also urinated in a standing position. Thus, it is desirable to always urinate in a sitting position; but if one fears impurity at a public toilet, etc. there is no harm if one urinates standing.

Hudhaifah relates that the Messenger of Allah (saws), went to a public garbage dump and urinated while standing. Hudhaifah went away, and the Prophet (saws) then called him over. The Prophet made ablution, and wiped over his shoes. This is related by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, and Tirmidhi.

There is absolutely nothing in the Sunnah that states that one is required to do a ghusl or full bath everytime he urinates standing! One must wash his private parts after urination, do the wudu, and he will be considered pure and available for prayer.

Your Statement: One of Ulama said that if one person Urinating while standing , he is commited a big sin and in afterlife we will get some punish from Allah SAW .

Beloved brother, if one makes it a habit of always standing and urinating, then it would obviously be wrong and impermissible. But, if under some unusual circumstances where one fears impurity if he sits and urinates, there is no harm if one urinates standing as is evident from the act of the Messenger of Allah (saws) himself in the above authentic narration related by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi. If standing and urinating at any time was a major sin as the Aalim suggests, then it is absolutely inconceivable that the Messenger of Allah (saws) would have ever done it.

The criteria of the believers should always be from the guidance available in the Quran and Sunnah, and not what one of the ulama have suggested!

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
