Answer:

Restrictions in menses

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 222:

They ask about the monthly periods (of the women). Say (O Prophet), “It is a state of impurity; so keep apart from the women during their monthly periods and do not go near them (sexual intercourse) until they are clean.”

The only things that a believing woman experiencing her natural menses is prohibited from doing in Shariah are:

  1. The actual act of sexual intercourse.
  2. Offering ‘salaah’.
  3. Observing fasts.
  4. Performing the ‘tawaaf’ of the Sacred House.
  5. Entering a masjid.
  6. Physically touching the Glorious Quran.

Other than the above listed six restriction the believing woman who is experiencing her natural menses may do everything else she would do when in the state of purity, including reciting the Glorious Quran from memory, praising and extolling her Lord, doing ‘dhikr’ or remembrance of her Lord, making supplications, etc.

The absolute majority of the scholars in Islam are of the opinion that the menstruating women should abstain from physically touching a copy of the Glorious Quran, but there is absolutely no harm if she wishes to recite the Verses or Surahs of the Glorious Quran from her memory.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
