Miqat for Pilgrimat

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 5.28a

‘Mawaqit ‘are the specific places where a pilgrim intending to visit Makkah for 'Umrah or Hajj must declare his intention and put on ihram..

The Prophet (saws) himself specified these places:

For the people of Madinah the ‘miqat’ (singular of mawaqit) is Dhal-Halaifah, a place 450 kilometres to the north of Makkah, from where they must declare their intention and don the ihram..

For those coming from the direction of Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon, the ‘miqat’ is Al-Juhfah, a place 187 kilometres to the north-west of Makkah, and close to Rabigh, which is 204 kilometres from Makkah.

The ‘miqat’ for people coming from the direction of Najd is Qarn al Manazil, a mountain 94 kilometres to the east of Makkah.

Yalamlam, a mountain 54 kilometres to the south of Makkah is the ‘miqat’ for those coming from the direction Yemen.

For the pilgrims coming from the direction of Iraq, the miqat is Dhat Irq, a place 94 kilometres to the north-east of Makkah.

These places were fixed by the Prophet (saws) himself for all those who pass by them whether they come from these specific areas or some other areas. The Prophet (saws) said: "These places are for the people (coming from the direction of the above specified countries) as well as for others who pass by them on their way to perform Hajj or 'Umrah."

For a person who is present in Makkah and intends to perform Hajj, like the residents of Makkah, his miqat would be the place where he is staying in Makkah. However, if such a one intended to perform 'Umrah, then he should go to Al-Khol or At-Tan'im, for that is his miqat for 'Umrah.

In light of the above guidance from the Sunnah, if the person who is living in Makkah intends to perform the Hajj pilgrimage his miqat would be his place of residence; and he should make intention and don the ‘ehram’ for Hajj from his house and proceed straight to ‘Mina’ on the 8th of Dhul-Hajjah.

If the person who is living in Makkah intends to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, his ‘miqat’ would be Al-Khol or At-Tanim and he must make intention and don the ‘ehram’ from there and proceed to the Inviolable and Sacred Mosque in Makkah to fulfill his Umrah rites.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
