Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalam-u-Alaikum Brother

Is there somewhere in the Quran that prescribed punishment in an Islamic state for someone who converts from Islam to a different religion. Also in the Bible and Tora are there similar punishments.

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Punishment for apostate

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Is there somewhere in the Quran that prescribed punishment in an Islamic state for someone who converts from Islam to a different religion.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale-Imraan verses 90-91:

90 But those who reject faith after they accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of faith; never will their repentance be accepted; for they are those who have gone (far) astray.

91 As to those who reject faith and die rejecting, never would be accepted from any such as much gold as the earth contains though they should offer it for ransom. For such is (in store) a Penalty Grievous (in the Hereafter) and they will find no helpers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verses 137-138:

137 Those who believe then reject faith, then believe (again) and (again) reject faith, and go on increasing in unbelief; Allah will not forgive them nor guide them on the Way.

138 To the hypocrites give the glad tidings that there is for them (but) a Grievous Penalty.

Beloved brother in Islam, the prescribed punishment of those who reject faith after declaring belief listed in the Glorious Quran are all concerning the Hereafter. The Glorious Quran does not prescribe a specific punishment for such people in the life of this transitory and short world.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) has prescribed capital punishment for those who verbally declare their apostasy after having accepted Islam as their way of life.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.17 Narrated by Abdullah

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I (Mohamed (saws)) am His Messenger, cannot be shed except in three cases:

  1. In Qisas (retaliation) for murder,
  2. a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse,
  3. and the one who converts from Islam to another religion (apostate) and leaves the Muslims."

Your Question: Also in the Bible and Tora are there similar punishments.

Beloved brother, we are neither learned nor are aware of the exact rulings of the existing Bible and the Torah; thus this question would be best answered by one who is an expert in the knowledge of the existing Bible and Torah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
