My question today is about Sajda-e-Talawat.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamoalaikum Burhan Bhai.

My question today is about Sajda-e-Talawat. I would like to know how can one compensate for the sajda e talawat one has missed over the years; due to not knowing their significance?

Jazakallah Kheir

Answer:

Missed sajdah tilawa recitation

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.185 Narrated by Ibn Umar

Whenever the Prophet (saws) recited the Sura which contained the prostration of recitation (sajdah-tilawah) he (saws) used to prostrate and then, we, too, would prostrate.

The absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that prostrations for the "'ayyat of sajdah" is a preferred Sunnah for the one who recites the Verse and for the one who hears it, and it is best done as soon as one recites it or hears it.

Your Question: I would like to know how can one compensate for the sajda e talawat one has missed over the years; due to not knowing their significance?

If in the past, one who was ignorant of the significance of the ‘sajdah-tilawa’, did not perform the prostrations….it would not be considered a sin in the Sight of Shariah or Allah Subhanah, and thus there is absolutely no prescribed atonement, or kaffarah, or compensation for his missing these voluntary prostrations in Shariah; it is expected that their Lord Most Merciful will not hold them accountable or answerable for missing a deed which is considered voluntary in Islam.

The absolute best compensation one should and must do after they have recognized the significance of the ‘sajdah-tilawa’ is that from this day forward, whenever they recite or hear a verse which contains ‘sajdah-tilawa’, they should bow down in humility and awe towards their Lord Most High, Most Supreme.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
