Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother,

I have a situation that I`m in and I`d like some help through your advice.

I`ve been repenting to God but then I tend to break it. I`ve broke my repentance to the Lord twice. I commit Fornication all the time. I am really ashamed of it.

I know it is a terrible sin to commit fornication, however I always have this thing in my mind that I`ll never do it again, but then whenever I meet my boyfriend, we always end up making love. I really love him. It`s not that I`m just making love to get pleasure. However this isn`t a good excuse that I love him so that makes it All Right to make love cause I know it`s still a sin.

I used to be a good Muslim, Pray 5 times, whenever I missed a Salat, I would still pray it Delayed. I used to recite the Holy Quran everyday, I felt I was going on the right path.

Now everything is turning the other way round, I broke my repentance, am Fornicating, using bad language all the time, not praying 5 times, I pray hardly 1 salat a day, I don`t know what`s wrong with me. This has been happening from the past 2 months. I always supplicate to God that he should HELP me and He should make me stay on the right path, however I`ve realized, everyday I turn myself away from religion.

I`m really AFRAID of this what I`m going through. I want to be a good Muslim as I once was. I want to pray again, not Fornicate, I don`t want to go to Hell. I am not afraid of dying, But YES I`m so Afraid of going to that Hell-fire mentioned in the Book.

Please let me know if there is any Special Supplication or Wazeefa I can do to change my life, and be a good Muslima?

Another Question- What does Islam say about Befriending Christian people?

All I ever knew was that God considers Idol- Worshippers or Atheist people as "Kafirs" But Christian and Jews are from the same religion Abraham came from just like Muslims.

Now please let me know what does The Quran say about befriending Christians?

Thank you very much and please do help me out soon.

God Bless.

Answer:

Repentance and Christians

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Please let me know if there is any Special Supplication or Wazeefa I can do to change my life, and be a good Muslima?

Whatever deeds one might have done, if one turns to Allah Subhanah in sincere Taubah and seeks forgiveness, Allah Subhanah has promised in the Holy Quran that He will forgive all the sins of such a believer, even if one has committed the gravest sin of all: ‘Shirk’! Not only that, our Lord is so Merciful and Generous, that He not only will forgive the sins of the believer, He will change his evil deeds done into good deeds!

The conditions or ways to seek sincere Taubah or Repentance from the Merciful Lord are:

  1. One is aware that he has sinned, and feels sorry and ashamed at his sin.
  2. Makes a solemn covenant and promise with Allah that he will not repeat his sin again.
  3. Turns to Allah and seeks forgiveness, before he has met with his appointment of death.
  4. Is a believer and does righteous good deeds thereafter.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumur verses 53-54:

(O Prophet) say: “O My servants who have wronged their own souls….Do not despair of Allah’s Mercy! Surely, Allah forgives all sins. He indeed is the All Forgiving, All Merciful. Return to your Lord and submit to Him before the scourge overtakes you; for then you may get no help from anywhere.”

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 135-136:

Allah likes such good people very much, who, if ever they commit a base deed or wrong their own soul by the commission of a sin, remember Allah instantly, and ask for forgiveness from Him for their shortcomings. For who, but Allah, can forgive sins? (And Allah loves those) who do not knowingly persist in the wrongs they did. These will be rewarded with forgiveness from Allah, and with Gardens beneath which canals flow, and they will reside therein forever! How excellent is the reward of those who do good deeds!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 25 Surah Furqaan verses 63-71:

The (true) servants of the Merciful are those who walk humbly on the earth. When the ignorant people behave insolently towards them, they say, “Peace to you”; (And those) who pass their nights in prostrating themselves and standing before their Lord and pray, “O our Lord, save us from the torment of Hell, for its torment is killing! It is an evil abode, and an evil resting place”. (And those) who, when they spend are neither extravagant, nor miserly, but keep the golden mean between the two extremes. (And those) who do not invoke any god but Allah Alone, nor kill a soul unjustly, which Allah has forbidden, nor commit adultery… He who does this shall be punished for his sin, and his torment shall be doubled on the Day of Resurrection, and he shall abide in a state of ignominy; EXCEPT THE ONE WHO MAY HAVE REPENTED (AFTER THOSE SINS), AND HAVE BELIEVED AND DONE RIGHTEOUS DEEDS. For then, Allah will change his evil deeds into good deeds, and He is very Forgiving and Merciful. In fact, one who repents and does righteous deeds, returns to Allah as one rightly should!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 54:

When those come to you who believe in Our Signs, say: "Peace be on you! Your Lord had inscribed for Himself (the rule of) Mercy. Verily if any of you did evil in ignorance, and thereafter repented and amended (his conduct), Lo! He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Dear and beloved sister in Islam, a special ‘wazifah’, or slogan, or chant, or supplication by itself cannot convert one from being a transgressor to a doer of good! What does bring about a change is the sincere intention of a person to fear Allah and the Last Day, stop transgression of the Laws of the Lord All-Mighty, turn back to their Lord Most Gracious seeking sincere repentance for the deeds one might have done in one’s past, make a solemn covenant with Him that they will not turn back towards transgressing His Prescribed Boundaries, and remain constant in doing good righteous deeds thereafter….it is the belief and the sincere fear of standing in the Tribunal of the Lord on an Inevitable Day that alone can bring about change in a persons’ attitude.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 79 Surah Naziat verses 34-41:

34 Therefore when there comes the Great Overwhelming (Event: The Day of Judgment!)

35 The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for

36 And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see

37 Then for such as had transgressed all bounds

38 And had preferred the life of this world

39 The Abode will be Hell-Fire;

40 And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower Desires

41 Their abode will be the Garden.

If one sincerely fears the standing before the Tribunal of their Lord Most High, turns back to Him seeking sincere repentance and forgiveness for their past deeds, amends their conduct and strives to do righteous good deeds thereafter….it is expected that they will find their Lord Forgiving and Merciful.

Your Question- All I ever knew was that God considers Idol-Worshippers or Atheist people as "Kafirs" But Christian and Jews are from the same religion Abraham came from just like Muslims.
The Lord Creator has divided his creation of mankind in two groups according to their beliefs:

  1. One group are those who believe in the Absolute and Supreme Oneness of Allah, believe in all His appointed Messengers, believe in all His Revealed Books, believe in the Angels, believe in the concept of the Hereafter, and believe in the Divine Decree or Qadr of their Lord….this group is classified as that of the believers.
  2. The other group, regardless of their set of beliefs and practices, if they disbelieve in any part of the above listed six aspects that constitute the belief of the believers are classified as disbelievers by the Lord Most High.

Because the people who call themselves Jews or Christians claim their origin from the absolutely monotheistic deen of Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.), they are termed as the ‘People of the Book’ by Allah Subhanah in the Glorious Quran. But because these people in essence deny Prophet Mohamed (saws) as the Last and Final Messenger of Allah and the Glorious Quran as the Last and Final Revelation of Allah, their belief falls short of being amongst the category of ‘believers’ and thus are termed by Allah as ‘disbelievers’ in His Glorious Quran.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 98 Surah Bayyinah verses 1-3:

The disbelievers from among the ‘People of the Book’ (Jews and Christians) and the ‘mushriks’ would not desist until the clear evidence should come to them: A Messenger from Allah, who should recite to them Holy Scriptures containing sound and correct writings.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 98 Surah Bayyinah verse 6:

Those who have disbelieved from among the ‘People of the Book’ (Jews and Christians) and the mushriks, they shall certainly enter Hell; and remain in it forever. They are the worst of all creatures!

Your Question: What does Islam say about Befriending Christian people?

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 60 Surah Mumtahina verses 8-9:

8 Allah forbids you not with regard to those, who fight you not for (your) Faith, nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

9 Allah only forbids you with regard to those, who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances) that do wrong.

In light of the above guidance of the Holy Quran, Allah Subhanah guides the believers to judge the non-muslims or disbelievers, including the People of the Book, under two categories:

Category-1: Those disbelievers who do not fight the believers regarding their faith, nor drive the believers out of their lands and homes; Allah guides the believers to deal with them kindly and justly….for indeed, Allah Subhanah loves those who are just.

Thus, if a non-believer or a non-believing nation is not at war with the believers, there is no harm in dealing with such people in a good, kind, and just manner; for indeed they are our brothers in humanity.

Category-2: But Allah has forbidden the believers to befriend those unbelievers who have declared war on the believers because of their faith in Islam, and who drive the believers out of their homes and lands; or those unbelievers who help and support these enemies to oppress the believers. These are the unbelievers whom Allah has guided the believers not to befriend.

Allow us to relate a timely example to understand the command better. We see in the world today that the United States government would not allow or permit any of its citizens to be close friends with any member of the Al-Qaeda organization, or Usama bin Ladin, or any other person or state with whom the USA has declared war or has enmity with. Similarly, Allah guides the believers that those people who have declared their enmity with the believers because of their faith in Islam, or those people who strive to hurt the interest of the believers and Islam; it would not behove a believer to befriend such enemies of Allah.

A good example of such a ban of friendship in today’s time would also be of a Palestinian muslim or any other believer who would start befriending some people of the Israeli army, who are ardent enemies of Islam and the believers! Such a friendship would not be allowed in the sight of Allah Subhanah.

Allah Subhanah has warned the believers that those believers who do take such enemies of Allah and Islam as their friends; on the Day of Judgement, they will be counted as one of them!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 57:

57                 O ye who believe! Take not for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject faith; but fear ye Allah if ye have Faith (indeed).

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 51:

51 O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship), is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.

But if some people are non-muslims, but do not hold any hatred with the believers or with Islam; Allah guides the believers to be kind and just with such people.

Some people have taken the above verses of friendship with the disbelievers out of context, and have started a huge propaganda that Islam does not allow the believers to take the non-muslims as friends! But that is an inaccurate understanding!

Those non-muslims who have no enmity with the believers, there is absolutely no harm in keeping good relations with them, being kind to them, helping them in humanity, and dealing with them in justice.

In light of the context of the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah, only those non-muslims who have a hatred against the believers because of their faith in Islam; Allah has commanded the believers not to befriend them.

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
