salamalaikum, resected brother Burhan. my problem is that sometimes , not too often , i indulge in neurotic thoughts. the thoughts occur and re-occur in my mind so frequently that i almost feel pathetic about my self.... these days too , my mind is flooded heavily with different thoughts, thoughts about my past , although alhumdulillah i `ve never committed any sin which i could repent on , but there were some mistakes which i think every human being makes in the course of his / her life and i have been sincerely asking my Lord to forgive my mistakes and He has bestowed me with a good life alhumdulilah but still i feel obsessively guilty for no reason....please help me out of this situation...i`m sick and tired of these over-indulgent thoughts and depressed mental frame work...should i see a psychiatrist ? or if there is any dua to come out of this thing , please let me know about that...i`ll be really reallyu grateful to you for that.

Answer:

Contentment depression

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Dear and Beloved Sister, know with absolute conviction that your Lord Creator loves those who love and obey Him, know with absolute conviction that your Lord Creator is well aware of your exact condition, know with absolute conviction that He is near and answers those who call upon Him in sincerity and humility, know with absolute conviction that if He desires some good for you, none and no combination in creation has the power to withhold His Mercy…and know with absolute conviction that the life of this world is more than a short and transient test from our Lord who puts us through conditions good and bad, only to see what we do in those conditions!

Neurotic thoughts, desperation, depression, undue stress, etc. are the diseases and the lot reserved for the disbelievers, who neither fear Allah and the Last Day, nor have any hope in the infinite and sublime Mercy of Allah Subhanah!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale-Imran verse 175:

175 It is only the Shaytaan that suggests to you the fear of his votaries: be ye not afraid of them but fear Me if ye have faith.

Dear and beloved sister, know with conviction that it is none other than the avowed enemy of man, the accursed Shaytaan, who inspires these thoughts of desperation and depression into the hearts of men! But our Lord Most Gracious, Most Merciful guides His believing slaves towards His Forgiveness and Mercy and the hope of attaining those Everlasting and Eternal Gardens of Bliss in the Hereafter!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumur verses 53-54:

(O Prophet) say: “O My servants who have wronged their own souls….Do not despair of Allah’s Mercy! Surely, Allah forgives all sins. He indeed is the All Forgiving, All Merciful. Return to your Lord and submit to Him before the scourge overtakes you; for then you may get no help from anywhere.”

Those who sincerely believe in their Lord and the Last Day, obey Him, fear Him, and in absolutel humility are hopeful of His Forgiveness and His Mercy…it is the solemn promise of their Lord that not only shall they have absolutely no fear and no grief in their eternal lives of Paradise in the Hereafter, but they will be sheltered from fear and grief in the life of this world too.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 111:

111 Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the Garden (of Paradise): …. Then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the Achievement Supreme!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 41 Surah Ha-Meem verses 30-32

30 In the case of those who say "Our Lord is Allah" and further stand straight and steadfast, the Angels descend on them (from time to time): "Fear ye not!" (they suggest) "nor grieve! but receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss), the which ye were promised!

31 "We are your protectors in this life and in the Hereafter: therein shall ye have all that your souls shall desire; therein shall ye have all that ye ask for!

32 "A hospitable gift from One Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!"

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chatper 2 Surah Baqarah verse 112:

112 Nay! Whoever submits his whole self to Allah and is a doer of good he will get his reward with his Lord; on such shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 46 Surah Ahqaf verse 13:

13 Verily those who say "Our Lord is Allah" and remain firm (on that Path) on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

Regardless of the trials and tribulations the conditions of life might bring upon them, the true believers, who sincerely believe in Allah and the Last Day, know that these trials and tribulations of this short and transient life are no more than only tests Decreed upon them by their Lord….and on One Inevitable Day they will be gathered in the Presence of their Forgiving and Merciful Lord and will receive a full recompense for their patience.

Your Question: or if there is any dua to come out of this thing , please let me know about that...i`ll be really reallyu grateful to you for that.

If one asks any individual what is truly his heart’s desire, or what is he truly searching for, or why does he try so hard to earn and gather wealth, etc.; if one truly searches deep, you will, in all probability, get only one universal answer!: Everyone running the ‘rat race’ of life, is searching for ‘contentment’!!!

A student thinks that if he studies hard for so many years and obtains his desired degree and qualification, he will be able to get a good job and that will give him that desired ‘contentment’! A youth thinks that if he marries a good woman and has a family, he will attain that desired ‘contentment’! A businessman thinks that if he earns much money, he will attain ‘contentment’! Every person, regardless of his nationality, race, color, language, status, wealth, etc., every single human being is in search for this illusion of ‘contentment’! But when the person reaches his goal which was supposed to give him the ‘contentment’ he so desires, he only realizes that he is not content, and makes another goal, and when he reaches that and is not content, makes another one! But this illusion of ‘contentment’ always remains beyond his reach. At one stage, the person has changed and chased so many goals in the hope of attaining contentment, only to realize that he is not content…until finally, desperation and depression sets in!

All Praise is due to Allah Subhanah Who has guided the believers towards the ONLY thing that will bring contentment to one’s heart! The whole world is desperately searching for this state of one’s heart, but little do they realize that Allah Subhanah has reserved this state of contentment only for those who unconditionally submit to Him and His Guidance! The one secret every human being is searching for, and the absolute antidote of depression and desperation is secured in this One Beautiful and Glorious Verse of the Al-Quran:

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 13 Surah Raad verse 28-29:

The people who have accepted (the Message), their hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Note it well!, that it is Allah’s Remembrance Alone that brings contentment to the hearts! Blessed are those who have accepted the Message and done righteous deeds. They will have a good end.

Thus, my beloved sister in Islam, the one and only thing in this whole wide world that can truly bring contentment to your heart, and take you far far away from the state of depression and hopelessness, is the constant Remembrance of your Lord Creator, Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds!

Remember your Lord as much and as often as you can, Praise and Extol Him as much as is easy for you, read the Glorious Quran as much as you can with understanding, obey, follow, and completely submit yourself to the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah, strive to do deeds which will bring about the Pleasure of your Lord and abstain from doing deeds that bring about His Anger and His Wrath….for Allah is our witness sister, nothing, and I repeat and reiterate, absoltuely nothing in this world can bring ‘contentment’ to one’s heart except the Remembrance of Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds!

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
