Adhaan in new born baby's ear

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamalaikum
I may be wrong, but I read somewhere (the reference I cannot provide at the moment) that the Adhan be pronounced in the right ear of the new born and the Iqqama in the left year.

Brother Burhan, may Allah bless you with more knowledge and wisdom, and all the muslimeen too, please remove my confusion.

Jazak Allah Khair,

W'Salam

Answer:

Adhaan in new born babys ear

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 5086 Narrated by Abu Rafi'

I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) uttering the call to prayer (Adhan) in the ear of al-Hasan ibn Ali when Fatimah gave birth to him.

There is no authentic narration of the Messenger of Allah (saws) whereby it is indicated that he (saws) would utter the Adhaan in the right ear of the new born, and Iqaamah in the left ear. The Sunnah is to utter ONLY the Adhaan in the ears of the new born, and the wisdom behind it is that the first thing the new born hears when he enters the world, is the Message of Tawheed and Islam.

It is also the Sunnah, that on the 7th day:

  • Appoint a good name to the new born.
  • Shave the head of the new born, and give the equivalent weight of the shaved hair in silver as sadaqa (charity).
  • Do the aqiqa(sacrifice one animal for a female born, or two animals for a male born).

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
