Circumcision obligatory or not?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

As we all know that every human being is a creation of the Almighty, and the Almighty is the only one who decides on the form of the person male or female, decides on how his hands, fingers etc in whole his body structure shal be.

Now in the approx 6 billion population of the world, let us assume there are 2 billion muslims and 4 billion non muslims.

Why is it that a male muslim is circumcised (khatna) whereas the remaining world males do not get circumcisied and perform the same duties like any other muslim male and do not suffer any hygenie problems, sex problems or any other that is projected in Islam for not having circumcised.

I want to know why it is a rule and a complusion in Islam to carry out circumcisation on a Muslim Male ?

Answer:

Circumcision obligatory or not?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.777 Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Five practices are characteristics of the ‘Fitra’ (nature): circumcision, shaving the pubic region, removing the hair under the arms, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short."

The circumcision as stated by the Messenger of Allah (saws) is a characteristic of ‘fitrah’ or nature, and a Sunnah of not only Prophet Mohamed (saws) but also the Sunnah of the friend of Allah and the father of the Prophets, Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.). Circumcision is not compulsory or obligatory in Islam, but rather it is a Sunnah or voluntary act, and if for any reason, the parents of the baby do not wish to get their child circumcised, it would not be condemned as a sin.

Medical science and knowledge have today indeed proved that circumcision is indeed a healthier and more hygienic process, and most good doctors, even though they may be non-muslims, encourage circumcision in advanced nations like the US and Europe.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
