Answer:

Can one pray for non-muslim while alive?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran: Chapter 16, Surah An-Nahl Ayat 125: Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and excellent admonition and argue with people in the best manner. Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Way and who is Rightly guided.

A believer who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, is a sincere well-wisher of every human being, whether the being is a muslim or a non-muslim. All human beings are his brothers in humanity, and it is his duty and responsibility that he strives to invite them to the Truth, and sincerely prays to the Merciful Lord to guide them to Al-Islam. Thus it is not as if one can pray for the guidance of non-muslims; but rather, if the believer is sincere in his belief, he must pray for them to be guided to the path of Truth.

Every Prophet of Allah who ever walked on this planet earth invited the disbelievers to believe in and worship the One True Lord Alone, and sincerely prayed to the Merciful Lord to guide them to the Truth of Al-Islam.

If one studies the Seerah of the Prophet Mohamed (saws), even when the disbelievers rejected the Message, rebuked him, abused and stoned him; he prayed to Allah Subhanah to forgive them their sins done in ignorance, and prayed to the Merciful Lord to guide them to Al-Islam.

It is absolutely permissible for the believers to pray to the Merciful Lord for the guidance of a disbeliever to Al-Islam as long as he is alive; but if after ones best efforts, the disbeliever does not accept the Truth and dies as a non-muslim, then Allah Subhanah has forbidden the believers to pray for their forgiveness.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 113: It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe, that they should pray for forgiveness for pagans even though they be of kin, after it is clear to them that they are companions of the Fire.

Thus as long as the non-muslim is alive, one is permitted to ask Allah Subhanah to forgive them their sins and guide them to the Truth of Al-Islam; but if one dies as a pagan, then Allah Subhanah has commanded the believers not to pray for them.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
