Importance of Khak e Shifa

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Could you please let me know the relevance of Khak-e-Shifaa which is used by the Bohra's for practically everything.  Also there is this Bohra belief of hanging photographs of horses in the house for good luck. Can you explain the logic of these items and the importance in Islam.

Answer:

Importance of Khak e Shifa

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1:Could you please let me know the relevance of Khak-e-Shifaa which is used by the Bohra's for practically everything.

Khak-e-shifaa, which literally means the dust of healing is the dust or sand some people gather from the mausoleum of Hadrat Hussain ibn Ali (r.a.) in Karbala. They believe that dust from this place has a healing properties, and they eat or give a few particles of this dust to one amongst them who is sick.

There is absolutely no such thing as a khak-e-shifaa or dust of healing in the tenets of Islam! Never did the Messenger of Allah (saws), his noble companions, or his ahle-bayt ever follow this practice of eating the dust of any place, nor did they recommend the believers to do so.

Q-2: Also there is this Bohra belief of hanging photographs of horses in the house for good luck.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 10 Surah Yunus verse 107:If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove it but He: if He do design some benefit for thee, there is none can keep back His favor: He causeth it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth. And He is the Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

It is the belief of the believers that all good that happens to someone, it is because of, and from Allah Subhanah. To believe that some thing can bring good luck is a manifestation of the abomination of shirk, or associating something with Allah Subhanah.

No horse, or no photograph of some horse, or anything in this universe has the power to bring about any good; it is Allah Subhanah Who Alone has the Power to bring about good on anyone amongst His slaves He Pleases.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
