Abortion

Mu'meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

dear Burhan.
I had sent you an email a few days ago asking a question about the permisibility of abortion in Islam, but I have still not received a reply from you. I am facing a great dilema because I feel a third child so close in age to my two other children will not only lead to neglect on my part
but will also be a great strain to me both mentally and physically. However I cannot go through with an abortion if it is against Islam and although most readings have said that it is not allowed there is no clear ruling on it.
Would it be haram if I were to abort my pregnancy. Please reply me urgently because it is causing me great distress. Thank You

Answer:

Abortion

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Statement: I cannot go through with an abortion if it is against Islam

May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best in this world and the Hereafter for your conviction in following and obeying the Commands and Guidance of the Merciful Lord and Creator. Your this statement demonstrates that you have indeed submitted your will to the Will of your Lord. May Allah Subhanah accept and increase your submission, have mercy on you, and give you and us all the wisdom and courage to abide by His Commands until we ultimately meet with our appointment of death. Ameen.

Your Question: Would it be haram if I were to abort my pregnancy.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 140:Most surely they became losers, who, in their folly and ignorance killed their own children; and made unlawful what Allah had provided them as sustenance, falsely ascribing prohibitions to Allah. Surely, they went astray and were not at all rightly guided.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 151 (part):You should not kill your children for fear of poverty; for We provide sustenance for you and will provide sustenance for them also.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 31:Do not kill your children for fear of want; for it is We Who provide for them, and for you as well. Indeed, their killing is a heinous crime!

Islam has permitted the spacing of children in a marriage. It has been reported in authentic narrations that some of the noble companions of the Messenger of Allah (saws) used to practice ‘coitus-interruptus’, whereby the male organ is removed from the female organ just before ejaculation.

Most of the scholars of Islam are of the opinion, that there is no harm if one uses one of the modern forms of birth control, to space the ages of their children. But all of them are unanimous in their opinion that any form of permanent birth control is absolutely forbidden in Islam. One may use a temporary form of contraception, if his intention is to space his children.

But once the child is conceived in the womb of the mother, it is absolutely forbidden in Islam to have the child aborted, and thus murder an innocent soul.

Your Statement: and although most readings have said that it is not allowed there is no clear ruling on it.
Beloved sister in Islam, the above quoted Aayahs of the Holy Quran are absolutely crystal clear, without any ambiguity whatsoever. Abortion is absolutely forbidden by Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds.

Your Statement: because I feel a third child so close in age to my two other children will not only lead to neglect on my part but will also be a great strain to me both mentally and physically.

Beloved sister in Islam, we assure you that whatever trials you think you might face with the advent of your new child, and whatever strain you fear might affect you mentally and physically; it will be nothing compared to the strain and burden one who commits abortion will come under when standing in the Just and Supreme Court of Allah Subhanah on the Day of Resurrection!

We, as your sincere well-wishers and brothers and sisters in the faith of Islam, plead, urge and beg you to fear the Wrath and Anger of the All-Mighty Lord and remove this thought of abortion from your mind. Allah Subhanah is the Lord and Master of the Heavens and the Earth and everything that exists in between; and if you put your trust in Him and Him Alone, He will suffice for you and provide for you from His Infinite Bounty and Mercy.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 31:Do not kill your children for fear of want; for it is We Who provide for them, and for you as well. Indeed, their killing is a heinous crime!

If Allah Subhanah Wills, this child might grow up to be a righteous slave of Allah Subhanah and a pious believer, and thus be a comfort of your eyes in the life of this world, and a source and means for your entrance to Paradise. Put your full trust in Allah Subhanah and do not allow the avowed enemy of mankind, the Shaitaan, to beguile you into disobeying the Commands and Guidance of your Merciful Lord.

May Allah Subhanah have Mercy on you and Guide you to make the right decision.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
