Acting and writing

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Acting & writing.... A Salam mualaikum.
I am a Muslim and do all my prayers and attend mosque to learn surah's off by heart and read the Quran.
because I live in a country that has not just go muslims, I sometimes wonder what is right and wrong.
Firstly, I've always wondered why singing and dancing is haraam. Is it because when singing it is lies and therefore dancing to lies is haraam? If that is the case, would it still be haraam to sing a song that is about the truth?
Secondly, I love acting, it is my passion. I would love to work in a drama workshop or as a drama teacher when I'm older in'shallah, but is it haraam? My mum says that it is haraam to act, but I asked her recently about why some Muslims do act. She said that the ones in Algeria that  do act (my mum's origin.) don't do anything haraam. Is that alright? Would it be alright to be a drama teacher but not disobey my religion.
Finally, is it haraam to be an author? I love writing and my mum said its fine as long as I don't write about anything that is inappropriate or disregards islam.

Thank you for your consideration to reading these questions.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sister there is no restriction in singing as long as there is no indecency involved such as we see in the modern hip-hop songs sung on MTv etc.. If you sing in the praise of Allah swt you will earn rewards.

Similarly music that instigates one to do indecent dance moves is haraam. String music in particular is considered haraam in Islam. Though the duff and drums etc are acceptable.

Acting is discouraged because most modern dramas have unsuitable language, dance, romance etc., which only incites indecency in the viewers mind and heart. If you partake in dramas that are socially good with moral content then there would be no harm. Similarly in writing. If you are involved in writing that benefits mankind then there is huge rewards to be earned. But if you write fictitious novels of murder, mayhem, love triangles and sex etc., then surely you would be held severely accountable in moulding young minds towards indecency.

In Islam every amal should be to receive the pleasure of Allah swt.. Therefore if you can justify your actions and be assured that they have no indecency and mankind in general will benefit then that amal would be halaal and acceptable.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
